Car tax, am i being stupid?

About a month ago i bought my 2nd Accord Type R. I knew the tax was due in a few months. I did a bit of research a few weeks after purchasing the car and was a tad disappointed to find out id be hammered for £400 tax for 12months. My car was registered 12-7-01 and CO2 emmisions are 229g/kg.

I recieved car tax reminder today and it says its going to cost me £115.50 for 6months or £220 for 12months and not £220 and £400 as per the DVLA website.

My car falls into band G, so why do i have "cheap" tax? Im not complaining, just curious!

New bands don't come into effect until 31st March 2009 AFAIK.

See this is what i had heard but according to the DVLA website ...

The rates shown apply to tax discs taken out from 13 March 2008.

So if this is the case and new bands dont kick in till next March, i would be wiser to stick 6months on at the current "cheap" rate then another 12months at the "cheap" rate thus avoiding expensive for a while?

iirc this is looking likely to be changed to cars as old as yours, but not yet...

I think you're getting the last tax band change confused with the new one that's upcoming but not in place.

Wouldn't your car be band F

As band G says for for cars registered on or after 23/03/06

Are you sure it was £220 for 12 months and not £210?

The Rates of Vehicle Excise Duty document from the DVLA shows your car should be taxed at £210 for a 12 month period.

hmmm ....

Yup, it means cars registered after the 2001 date are taxed based on CO2. Band G however is only for cars registered after the 2006 date

exactly, come next tax year you'll get the new tax. This is your last year of cheap car tax.

one of the reasons everybody was so up in arms about the whole car tax thing, was that they removed the "only for cars registered on or after xx in 2006" bit. And backdated to 2001 for cars like yours.
