Hi all,

I just took my mondy down to a local garage and they said that my near side rear brake pad needs replacing. But they also said that they would have to do the driver's rear brake pads at the same time... as everyone does both wheels and never one wheel on its own when the pads have worn. I thought you could get just the one wheel done on it's own by a garage???

Also got a quote for the pads being replaced on both wheels - £76 inc.

But they said that I don't have to have my discs replacing as well, but that it's recommended because there's a slight scorch mark on the nearside rear disc about 5mm in width going around the circumference of the disc...

To get ATE pads and discs fitted on both rear wheels they quoted me for £176 inc. I'm going to ring around for more quotes anyhow, but would like to know what you think to them, and more importantly their insistence on having to do the wheels in pairs even though it's just the nearside rear that is the culprit.

Thanks in advance.

My god, just get some OE replacement pads for what £30, and fit them yourself in 30 mins.

You do need to do both sides however (well, you don't need to, but I wouldn't want to have my pads more worn on one side of the car than the other).

i have no idea how to fit them myself, or even where to get OE replacement pads from, can you point me in the right direction for both these things please? Is that 30 minutes for doing both wheels ?

If you are not confident to do it i wouldnt fit brake parts yourself, its a very easy job but the pads alone will be around £30, so for £76inc i'd just get them fitted by the garage. To get the parts just look in yellow pages or google for motorfactors, or even buy them from the main dealer.

Fortunately my car comes with a big spring to reset the master cylinder after I have pushed the brake pedal down...

You mean it isn't supposed to stay on the floor? I thought you had to hoik it back up with your toe on every car!

^^^ do this.

don't forgtet to get a master cylinder reset tool if you do it yourself.

No need to touch the MC, just clamp the hose to the caliper, open the blled nipple and lever back the pads.
