hi guys, this is my third visit to these forums in search for some help and this time it is a computer for myself as im a total noob at technology. I have a budget of about 1500 to 1600 quid and would like a really good gaming rig. I have taken a look at the ready made systems from ocuk since i need one quickly but i might change my mind if you guys can spec me a really hardcore system. I do not need a monitor/keyboard/mouse as i have those already.

This is the ready made system i have looked at

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-070-OK

so im mainly looking to have
-SLI
-DDR3 since its the latest :D
-quad core

I am completely open to suggestions and very thankful for your help.

DDR3 is pointless, so I've included 4GB of DDR2. It also comes with two ATi 4870 Graphics cards.

quick thing to note that people say that the tuniq touches the fins on the mobo (not a problem but worth a note) and also go for the 750gb f1 drive, 64bit vista (whatever flavour) and its a good solid build.

If you can wait till august then when the 4870x2 is apparently due, it may be worth holding till then just incase :D

lukeharvests build is good but as said before get vista 64 bit.
Get rid of that sound card because it will give you nothing but grief when using vista. Get an asus instead.
Get a q6600 instead of the q6700, the only difference is the half multiplyer which is not woth paying for.
That is not a modular psu.
Its worth paying the extra few quid and getting the f1 640gb hdd's as they are faster.

hi :) thanks for the build luke but i was wondering if you could elaborate on why ddr3 is a waste id just like to know for knowledge purposes. Also i was wondering if i could go for some Nvidia cards instead? i really love nvidia because ive had nvidia graphics in all my previous computers, it would be great if you could recommend what nvidia cards to go for in SLI, anyhow so far this is the build ive come up with myself;

ok so i assume you dont need monitor and kb/m?

and DDR3 is voer priced at the moment for no noticable increase unless you spend over £400 for 2GB. its not worth it.

and nto to sound rude, but please dont be a fanboy when it comes to ccomputers. the ATI cards are blazingly fast ATM, esp. in crossfire, which is scaling 100%, which SLI can only dream off. also nvidia chipsets for stability are a major problem, where as intel chipsets clock as high, and are perfectly stable.

here is my spec.

If you must go 'green', then a single GTX 280. As mentioned SLi is not as good as Crossfire.

DDR3 not yet. According to IT-xperts, maybe mid-next year & by then better mobos/chipset that take full advantage will be out.

so two things are pretty much clear, not to go for SLI and not to go for DDR3, apart from that what would be better a single GTX 280 or 2x ATI 4870 cards in crossfire, and changing the monitor is not an option :( i just bought it a month ago but i might be able to nick my brothers 24" :D

1) i have just noticed a special deal on a pre built system by overclockers and it is kind of similar to the specs here, would it be a wise choice to go for it or should i go ahead and order the spec Shaffa has specd for me? because shaffa's spec gives 8gb of ram while overclockers prebuilt system only has 4gb i guess this has something to do with overclocking, does more RAM mean less overclocking?
2) What power supply would work well with crossfire and quadcore, and not cost a fortune cough cough enermax :)

First have to say that you should never skimp on what's powering your £xxx components especially considering you want to go dual GFX (& you have the budget).

That said, the Corsair TX 750W (here) should power a Crossfire/SLi rig fine without breaking the bank ;)

that corsair will be fine, infact itll be perfect, BUT if you do want supreme quietness and modular cables, IMO i would recommend the Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 750W PSU.

with a board as good as the ASUS rampage 8GB and overclocking will not be a problem at all.

thank you for the specs and wonderful advice, once again the people on overclockers forums came to my rescue :) what would i do without you guys, just letting you know ive made my order and gone for the spec by Shaffa, changed the case to a cooler master stacker to suite my taste. Once again a sincere thanks to every one who helped, hopefully this PC will add a few years of joy :)

np mate we are here help, nothing more :)

i only ask one favour, can you post pics of the build? i love seeing peopel builds :)

oh and one more, please keep cable managment while building it to a top priority :D

hopefully you will get years of joy

sure Shaffa i dont have a digital camera but my phones camera is quite good so i will try and take some good pictures :) and hopefully keep the pc cabling neat and tight
