My mother is having a few problems with her left leg and is finding long journeys tough going. Current car is an 02 Audi A4 TDI. Something similar of that ilk but I would probably try to get her into something a bit smaller like a golf or similar.

I have no idea who does a good auto box. Price wise, I'm not sure what she'd get for the audi (silver 130HP with about 80K) so say its sold and we've got 10K to spend. No real need for her to spend a brick load of dosh on a car.

Any help appreciated.

At the risk of sounding a bit obvious why not keep the Audi? If its been looked after an 02 plate Audi is a long way from being ready for replacement and is probably still reasonably tidy..

not an auto?

Well sticking to that class is probably your best bet, small autos aren't renowned for being great. Merc autos are so perhaps a C220 cdi or something similar?

I fail at the internet, SO hard.

Definately not another A4 becuase the multitronic boxes are a ticking timebomb.

320d Auto?

We tested a 3 series before the audi and I came to the conclusion you drove the BM and the Audi drove you. I liked the BM but it wasn't me buying and she needed something that was totally effortless. The clutch however has always been quite heavy for her.

But of course this would be of less concern in an Auto.

The problem you've got at this budget is:

Mercedes £10k C Class is built like a packet of Mr Kiplings apple pies
Audi's £10k A4 Multitronic has a gearbox which expires all the time
Lexus £10k IS isn't a diesel

Which unfortunately pretty much leaves BMW's 320d as the only compact executive diesel automatic thats worth considering. I honestly cant think of anything else unless she trades down to a Golf but..

While this is a bad pricepoint for a Mercedes i would be still be shopping for a C-class. Nothing else will have the softness and feeling of luxury (falsely presented or not). The automatic boxes are very strong and should prove reliable.

I may be biassed in that i really like Merc interiors, but i do think that the mercedes would suit an older woman better than the BMW's.

How about a Jap car. Nissans seem to be very good at autoboxes. I test drove a Primera 2.2 diesel auto and it was excellent. Styling is some what of a personal choice though.

Might get a 02+ E Class for that sorta money, awesome cars especially when you get to the bigger engines.

Aren't they riddled with electrical faults and rust problems? :)

Not if you find a good un, but generally speaking upto about an 04 car you have to be careful with, rust is not a problem if the car has a full MB Service History as they will do the repairs FOC.

Quick Question - Is she a brand snob?

I doubt she'd go Japanese. All her previous have been german. E36, C class (99) golf and now the Audi.

If the audi box really is that bad then she's probably looking at a BM. Unless she goes a bit smaller.

Any ideas what the audi is worth? trade and private.
