Just signed myself up for a golf outing with the local pub. Have no idea why as I've only been twice.

Was out in the back garden today getting back into the 'swing' of things and was getting a good 200-250 yards consistently but one of my weak points, very much like Happy Gilmore, is putting.

Anyone got any tips on putting? I am absolutely atrocious and will be knocking the ball around the hole constantly.

Also, any tips on golf in general appreciated.

Practice by looking at the hole and not at the ball, you should be surprised how well it works.
For your chipping always keep your left arm straight, if it bends you are swinging too far, this keeps a nice straight action through the ball too. Forget the driver for the first few holes and hit an iron, its easier to hit your second from the fairway :D

Cheers.

One thing I haven't a clue about is which club to use and in what situation.

Oh I don't care about how far you say you can hit the ball, I'm just totally sold on the idea that you can head out into the 'back garden' and smack golf balls about.

Although I imagine it will be a right bugger to collect them all up again!

I don't. Dad has tonnes of them and if he can go out and smack them into the field, I can too. :p

The best advice i can give you for club selection is that you should never be swinging the club as hard as you possibly can, the ball goes straighter with less effort as its all about not getting your body out of shape at impact.
When it comes to chipping, pitching and putting, if you have no rough or bunkers to negotiate, always play a lower trajectory shot in because if you duff it, it will still release forward where a high duffed shot will just stop.
Watch all of this guys clips and lessons, hes an absolute legend when it comes t teaching golf, theres a couple of dozen videos on there, my advice is watch all of them then get your bum over to the golf monthly forums, plenty of advice and experienced golfers on there (including myself!)

Nice one. Will preload some of these for watching later tonight. Thanks.

The one thing with putting is follow the putter through, if you stop the putter when you hit the ball thats when things go wrong. When practicing try not even having a backswing and just 'push' the ball into the hole (obviously you can't do this in a game) as this will help get a feel for the follow through.

just watch tiger when he has a putter in his hand.....

Its all in the arms. Move the club with your arms / shoulders not ya wrists. make sort of a V with ya arms and swing back and forth in a smooth swing. Practice the pace on the practice green to give you an idea on how far the ball will go to how hard you hit it. You will be surprised how far it will go with little force. When you make the stroke keep ya body as still as you can. dont lift ya head to early to watch it, If you pick the right line and pace there is no reason to look up till you hear it drop.

Give yaself a nice wide stance and sink some putts :)

Enjoy ya game
