Good automatic 4 door saloon for me ma?

If you are looking for something reliable, smaller (does it need to be a saloon?) and not wanting to spend a huge amount, the Honda Jazz might be worth looking at.

The Jazz CVT7 only has one physical gearbox. It can, however, operate in three completely separate modes, a fully automated continuously variable mode, an automated mode with seven stepped gears or a manual mode where you choose which gears the steering wheel mounted rocker selects.

I'd go with Volvo, something like an S40 if you're after a smaller car or otherwise an S60 or 80, as jamoor suggests. Bulletproof motors, excellent auto boxes, and very comfortable for cruising.

But of course this would be of less concern in an Auto.

The problem you've got at this budget is:

Mercedes £10k C Class is built like a packet of Mr Kiplings apple pies
Audi's £10k A4 Multitronic has a gearbox which expires all the time
Lexus £10k IS isn't a diesel

Which unfortunately pretty much leaves BMW's 320d as the only compact executive diesel automatic thats worth considering. I honestly cant think of anything else unless she trades down to a Golf but..

Anything from Jaguar worth having? X Type maybe?

The S80 is one of the most unreliable cars you can get according to the reliability index. The S60 fairs better but still well below average. With both cars though its electronics that let them down not the mechanicals.

Autoboxes are good , but need regular oil changes. The 4 speed (on the 6 cylinder model) can take standard dexron 3 (GM autobox) but the 5 speed needs expensive Volvo ATF.

The D5 engine was very good in its day but isn't as good as the new german diesels :(
