Bothered?

While it will never be a popular thread as everyone likes to justify their purchase, is anyone not that impressed by the performance boost in their games?

If you are not, could you perhaps state what resolution you play at and why?

I havent upgraded yet from my 8800gts, and would like more reasons not to :p

you make it sound like some sort of crime?

if you were on here saying you had a geforce 4 and were still holding out for the winner then fine, be cast into purgatory but an 8800gts is hardly rubbish!

I upgraded from an 8800 GTS 512mb and couldn't be happier. I feel the IQ is possibly a little better, my frame rates have gone up by a fair margin, especially at 1920 x 1200 (the resolution I game at) and most importantly, I can slap on high amounts of MSAA and max AF with much less of a hit.

I run 20" 1680x1050
8800GT to 4870 and was very happy.
I have a 4850 now though and will prob buy another of an X2variant .

i play a lot of 2142...and its doesnt seem so smooth with the 4870 as it did with 8800GTX...allthough the framerates is at least as good.
Also...COD4 gives me far higher frame rate...but is kindof jittery sometimes. GRID plays just awsome ...with another 20-30fps over the GTX.
I was thinking that the 512Mb or RAM and gaming at 1920x1200 with much AA and AF was maybe causing the jittery issue...ie maybe running out of Video RAM with the 4870 whereas the 768Mb in the GTX was sufficient. Can anyone clarify this?

Well im not particulally happy with the increase I got going from a 8800GTX to a BFG 280 GTX OC.

Not an ATI I know, but same sort of upgrade.:D

I've not had any slowdown in any games nor have i have to drop too many settings (Crysis being the exception). So until I notice the GTX starting to show it's age, it's pointless upgrading. Besides, i've just installed a waterblock to it so upgrading isn't as simple now.

My advice is that if you are playing the games you want at your prefered resolution without having to fiddle around too much with game settings to achieve a decent frame rate, don't bother upgrading.

I have always found that with AA and AF and res of 1920...the 8800GTX has always struggled a bit in some of the newest game...hence my upgrade. But like you say...if you are running a less res...there probably isnt much point unless you just like more FPS

Depends what resolution you game at.

If it's less than 1680x1050 then it's probably not worth it. Yet.

So what you are saying is that the resolution has now been upped from what used to be the mutts nuts of 1920X1200 to 1680X1050 as the gamers choice of resolution.

If you have a GTX 8800 and game at 1920X1200 stay with that card as buying the 280 or 4870 will do nothing for u?

No he's saying the opposite. 1680 x 1050 and below, not much difference as your your GTX will handle everything.

Gains only with 1920 x 1200 and aa.

You game at the maximum resolution of your monitor.

Umm not quite - if you play at 1920, you might see an improved frame rates without a doubt but it depends if you can live with the card as it is. My point is that if you can play all the latest game at max settings, then you have to ask "Is it worth paying the extra cash for?" Only you can answer this. See my previous post. playing at 1600 an below however, I doubt you will notice any difference.

When the card starts to struggle and/or you have to start lowering settings, then it's time for a new card. By that time, prices will have dropped.

Not exactly, no..

1680 or below then a GTX should be able to handle everything. Going higher, then you're more likely to see the benefits from upgrading to the latest offerings from ATI and NVidia.

Apologies if this wasn't clear..

Well, with your system specs, you will probably notice a nice difference.

HAve mentioned this in a couple of threads, but I upgraded from a 3870 to 4870, but some games are jsut held back by my CPU, even clocked at 3GHz. I get dips to 30's in ET:QW, can go down to 40 something FPS in UT3, and Crysis runs no better than it did with the G92 GTS I had a while ago.

Now I am just wondering whether to upgrade CPU, or just return the 4870 and stick to my 360. Am heavily leaning towards returning card.

Upgrading from a G80 GTS should see a bigger difference, especially the 320mb version. The G92 GTS is still a very competitive card.

It has been said before many times, but just how good was the 8800GTX when released! It can still hold it's own in many games even today. Maybe the 4870X2 will be another one of these - who knows...

It should be. A rough caclulationdepending on how well crossfire works in a particular game gives the 4870x2 a 80-180% gain over a 8800GTX.

Now you would notice that I would imagine.;)
