After much kind help from this welcoming forum (mmmmm sickly sweet praise!)

I would humbly offer a few of my tiger photos and other wildlife pics. I took this a couple of weeks ago in India after buying a 40d, nifty fifty (the 1.8f one) and the 70-300mm IS USM. This was my first foray into DSLR I have only ever used a compact 2mp canon before. At the time it seemed expensive but the fun it gave was well worth it!

I had a couple of major problems which I will work on

  • I was a complete nooob; really a complete nooob. If i ever get competant I'm sure I will regret the opportunities I had in the parks to take some really great shots.

  • You have to sit in the jeep at all times, everytime someone moves, the jeep rocks as it is a leaf sprung design- keeping things in focus is very hard when everyone is stretching to see the tiger.

  • I have no idea how to process images properly, so I have tried to sort out the colouring, but it is all a bit crude. I have all the RAWs and if anyone wants to have a go, I would be happy to email

  • In retrospect, I needed more zoom. 70-300mm was not enough.

I am having trouble getting flikr to display the photos in this thread, so hopefully the above link will show you a small selection of shots from India

There are many many more. I shall upload after I have processed, but only if deemed worthy!

This is my favourite. THe baby cub (Still 100kg!) was 4ft from us and came out of sheer curiosity and devilment to see what the big jeep was. I have a series of shots showing the switch from pride to curiosity to insecurity and surprise.

PS is there any way to get pictures onto the forum without buying hosting?

ooo maybe this will work

I have fiddled on lightroom thingy

edit- this photo has to be attributed to our brave naturilist who left onto the bonnet of the jeep to take this photo. We were slightly to the right of the tiger (as we look at it) so the naturalist climbed onto the bonnet, literally inches from the tiger to get that shot. I passed him the camera and he snapped away.

I lvoe the blood on the cub's whiskers- he has just been feeding

The true heroes of the park- they patrol the parks with no weapons and on push bikes, often dying to attacks by the animals they are trying to protect. They face gun wielding poachers with a loud voice and their fists.

After play charging our jeep four times and then running away from a chasing driver, this baby elephant has a lovely glint in her eye as she lets out a triumphant toot!

I like the one of him out in the open near the tree. If I was there its definitely the kind of shot i'd have worked on, great sense of habitat..

The first one you posted, of the Tiger sat on the ground looking up is also good, although you could always do with better light/angles/etc/etc, after speaking to friends who have been to India it can be very difficult to even catch a glimpse of them, let alone come back with full frame shots of wild tigers!

PS. If you want a little help with some processing, drop me a mail in trust or email me a raw and i'll have a go. :)

Thank you for comments!

I'll keep posting some of the more intresting ones up until somone yells at me to stop.

I want to try and do a shot with a tiger through the grass, with on the tiger in colour. As the tiger and the grass are both orange, how do you do this in lightroom or photoshop?

The second elephant one is a good one! Would love to get out to a similar place myself to take photo's of Tigers, etc...!

Oh man! Get out there ASAP, it was the best holiday I've had in my 25 years!

It is so exciting seeing things wild, completely voyeuristic, terrifying and fulfilling!

The photos were overexposed, so maybe that is showing up more on some people's monitors...

Any comments and criticism are welcome- like what to crop or colourings or doign mono conversions (which I think might look good on the elephants.)
