Vista 64bit on Q6600

Hi all,

I am new to this site but I have built systems for myself a few times over the years.

My question is, should I bother going vista 64 bit or stick to 32 bit with this processor, will I see any benefits right now in terms of gaming and video encoding.

I ran 32 bit and then 64 bit vista on a previous system with an AMD 64 x2 4200+ and saw no improvement.

Thanks for your feedback

You may as well. Also theres the whole sittuation about the amount of ram you can use with X86.

hi and welcome to the forums

i have just jumped and gone to the 64 bit side of vista
i would never go back to 32bit now the whole system seems more stable and i havent ran into any problems yet regarding compatibility with games and software etc, of course being able to use more that 3GB is a massive bonus the way i look at it 64 bit OS is the future and most processors sold are 64 bit so we might aswell use them to the full capabilities

Is there any real world need to go above 4GB of ram on a home machine, even for media work, ive never come across it ?

What I am asking is yes, I understand the theory of why the 64bit version would be better but in practise does it actually occur, so for example when running games and oing system performance testing is there a bonus in the 64 bit over the 32?

Also will vista spread the load of the operating system across the quad cores of the Q6600?

i would deffo recomend. Especially if u have 4gb of ram and might want to upgrade later. There are no problems with vista 64 now,, most companies have released 64bit drivers so all i say is give it a go, ive been running it for a year now with no problems

another vote for 64-bit. no driver issues, whatsoever. system is smooth and extremely stable.

I'm into Flt Sim and I can tell you that the graphics these days will 'suck up' every morsel of power and RAM...the visuals are really spectacular - and this is coupled with aircraft simulations that as Microsoft are fond of saying is 'as real as it gets'.
I'm convinced that not too far in the future, we will have the capability of having a 6 degrees of freedom flying platform in your study...:D
More power...in every area...because there are programs that will absorb it...

Running Q6600 @3.4Ghz with Vista 64.

Remember however, having a 64bit OS maybe detrimental to the amount of RAM you have because of the increased physical addressing.

Hi Langers

I also have a Q6600 and havent tried x64 at all yet but seeing your question has made me google a bit.

The general answer as far as I can see is the same as you experienced before. In real world terms you probably wont notice a difference. However drivers are now widely available and are stable and x64 does generally give an increase however small which should only improve with newer games and software. So in agreement with everybody above...go 64, it will only get better, but no real reason to bother unless you are rebuilding anyway.

As I am about to rebuild my gaming pc, you have just influenced me to go 64 as well :p

Not sure how to offer advice on your question about the OS spreading across the cores. There is no difference here between x86 and x64 as far as I know. It really comes down to if the app/game supports multiple cores where the real speed gains are seen. If you where asking if Vista will balance single threaded apps across the cores then the answer is yes it will. If you go into task manager and choose the processes tab and then right click a process you will find an option called set affinity where you can even manually assign cores to processes if you like

Cheers

I would definitely go 64 bit. As has been said here before, most of the previous issues that were present have now been fixed, and drivers have been released for 64 bit OSs.

Remember that the 4gb limit is for total system memory. With the 4870x2 rumoured to come with 2gb of RAM the next wave of graphics cards are going to make memory usage very tight for 32-bit users...

Bear in mind that not all applications will work under vista 64bit ie some internet security packages etc .

I didnt realise that dedicated GPU memory was an issue for 32 bit OS's, only an issue with intergrated graphics as it isnt part of the system memory

Maybe wrong though

32-bit has a limit of 4GB of total addressable memory. Everything in your system with memory on it has memory that needs to be addressed, even graphics cards, so this takes away from the remaining memory available for system use.

When running virtual machines and also programs like photoshop then you see how much 4GB of ram comes into play. I'm planning a new build with 8GB so I can run a lot more virtual machines, when running server 2008 in a VM it maxes out my ram.
