Hey folks

I have saved enough money for a 280 card, which i'll buy as soon as i get home from my vacation, sometime in August. The only problem i have is that i have only one PCI-E plug from my PSU. I'm assuming this card uses dual power connectors like the 8800GTX. Is there anything i can do at all in terms of converters or anything, i have a 500w PSU, NorthQ that should handle it, but i'm not too sure if i can do anything about the last plug.

Thanks :)

Other than the "wait for the 4870X2" comment, I'd feel uneasy using a molex>PCI-E plug connector as I think they are a bit dodgey, as that card requries at lot of power. I also though that a molex could only supply so much power (not enough for that card).

^^^iirc and my opinion.

AMD cards are not an option :)

So i should try the molex connectors, and if they don't work get a new PSU. Not exactly what i was hoping for but it's to be expected, thanks a lot for the help :D

Actually i must have been drunk or something last time i was looking, there are definitely 2 x 6 pin PCI-E plugs there, no 8-pin though, is it possible to get an attachement for the last 2, or should i just run it from 2 x 6, and just let it stay at that capacity?

Thats why its TWO molex to one PCI-E

Two PCI-6 will go into one PCI-8 with the included adaptor. Then two molex goes into one PCI-6.

So you will have 4 cables into your card. Thats how mine is.

The asus card I bought came with:

2*6pin to 1*8pin connector
2*molex to 1*6pin connector

... it also came with an 8-pin to 6-pin connector, which I doubt will be much use to anyone.

My PSU has 2 6 pin connectors, so I used them to power the 8-pin input, and used the molex adaptors on the 6-pin. It all worked out okay... But for you, you would need to find additional adaptors for either another 6- or another 8-pin from the molexes.

How come?

You get a great discount on nVidia products or?

Fanboy?

Nope, neither fanboyism nor discounts, just want a good card for folding and the otherwise fantastic 4000-series has a problem in that department for the time being.

Looks like i'm all set then, thanks a lot for the help everyone, very very helpful! :D
