2:2 Degree :(

JEsus a 2.2 is fine. Lower = bad.

I was about 1.5% away from a 2.1 which was annoying but c'est la vie.

Which is why universities operate vivas on a case by case basis. If you've proven yourself worthy of a 2.1 on almost everything but say, flunked an exam for whatever reason then wouldn't you think you deserve a 2.1?

I know myself that I was capable of a 2:1 its just in year 2 like a said I had a bad selection of modules to choose from and that reflected in my grades. I ended up having to do a tourism module, when im a geographer. If im forced to do somthing which A) I have no intrest in and B) is a different discipline in the way you communicate your work through essays, presentations etc then of course I'm not going to do too good.

It's over, hang yourself.

In seriousness, even the biggest, must up their own rear companies will still look at you.

In more seriousness, if you do choose suicide, walk into a hospital with a donor card stapled to your forehead, stick a 12 bore up you left nostril and blow your brains out on the ceiling.

Try getting an average of 59.83% and being told you cant have a 2:1 as 3/5 modules are under 60%.
1% more on any module would give me an extra 0.2% and make it a 2:1, but if I ask for a remark by external examiner it means graduating in November with a 2:2 or 2:1.
Only 1 of my mates on my course is graduating next week with me as the other 3 buggered something up and are graduating in November.
Thats really annoying!!

I'd say about 75% of companies that have contacted me about my application have asked whether I know my classification yet and I have said it is 59.8% and might be getting contested, most of them have noted it but not sure how many would actually read the percentage or jsut the 2:2 on a piece of paper

Oh and for the people saying "hang yourself" "a 2:2 is fine", its all down to personal preference, a lot of my friends got 2:2s and are happy, some got 2:1s and are happy. I wanted a 2:1 so Im annoyed mostly at myself for not putting a bit more effort into 1 module or for a tutor being harsh!

Depends what whatever reason was and how high the existing marks actually were! :)

Getting a remark may be difficult. I was recently just off a first (I was viva'ed, but that was unreasonably difficult... they asked about material not on the course and for references) and was told to get stuffed concerning a remark.

A 2.2 isn't the end of the world mind.

I suppose if there is nothing I can do I could always put on my CV high 2:2 and the percentage.
Don't do this. It wouldn't look very good on your CV, just put 2:2.

I graduated with a 2:2 in actuarial studies and yes it was annoying missing out on some jobs to people who got a 2:1 in mickey mouse studies however I'm sure if you're a good enough candidate you'll find a job easily enough.

Argh man that completley sucks, get the remark!!!! still a 2:2 degree is never something to be ashamed about.

Indeed. I was absolutely chuffed to get a 2:2 to be honest. I had been worried that I was not going to pass at all, so was pretty relieved. Also, being entirely honest, I really did find my degree properly hard, I actually felt like I'd achieved something. And history is a hard subject, so I am in no way ashamed with my grade :)

This man speaks sense.

Personally I wouldnot worry. Yes it will probably take more applications to get a job you want, but be persistent and if aptitude testing is part of the recruitment process don't be afraid to ask for a chance to prove yourself.

Not to sound like a complete patronising so and so, but if you don't put in the graft, you don't reap the fruits.

In my last year of my geography degree, I was wobbling with an average of about 58%. The feeling that I was about to waste all my hard work made me feel sick and in the last semester, I shut myself off to the world, had no social life and ended up pulling out a blinder and was getting firsts in all my assignments. I ended up with 68%. I kicked myself for not pushing earlier, otherwise I could have easily pushed for a first.

IMO you should have a break and think about doing a masters. It will make your CV look twenty times better than a desmond from a crappy uni. Up until I kicked myself up the backside I dossed about and my 58% reflected that. I now know why employers don't really opt for those with desmonds.

So yea, have a look into a masters would be my suggestion. But first, get your dissertation remarked and do whatever you can.

I'm really annoyed because it means that on paper I look as smart as some of the people on my course who would have just scraped the 2:2.
Got to LOL at the way you put down people that just scrapped a 2:2, compared to what you think you deserve but then you're be happy to appeal your way into a 2:1 getting the same grade as people that worked their butts off consistently!!!!. Can you say "double standards"?

How about instead taking responsibility for you actions (or lack thereof) chalking it up to experience and making sure you work hard and don't make the same mistake again?

So my degree was 0.5% off a 2:1, i'm really annoyed because it means that on paper I look as smart as some of the people on my course who would have just scraped the 2:2. It's basically down to poor module choice in the second year, this year I made better choices and the modules avaliable interested me more and I have been consistently in the 2:1 even first for one module.

When I actually worked out the weighting of my degree I need another 4%, is it worth getting my dissertation remarked as its a double module just 2% would get me what I need. Has anyone done this and what route do I need to go down, is it too late if it doesn't get sorted before graduation a week away?

Im also worried about my employment prospects will my application just get tossed to one side because its got a 2:2 when in reality I may be a better candidate than someone else?

Please Help

In all honesty, it’s not great but BUT BUT!!!! Depends what jobs you go for, because a lot of the big employers require a 2:1 + X number of UCAS points from AS/A levels.

This is simply the only way they can differentiate from the crowd and thousands of applications by drawing the line at 2:1s and auto filter out the 2:2s.

Best thing you can do, especially with a 2:2 Geography Degree from a mediocre Uni is do a Masters in something you would like to pursue. A good masters from a good Uni will set you up properly and give you a decent pay boost, good career prospects and better employability.

Also look at whether the field you want to work in has a Chartered status associated with it such as MRTPI (town planning a favourite of geographers)

Choose a Masters at a Uni which fulfils the academic requirements for your Chartership and your 2:2 is a thing of the past.

Honestly I wish Unis would give decent career advice, but most fail.

#edit....Experience also counts for a lot, but its getting the job to get you the experience where the degree will help in the first instance.

Also, just to be really annoying again ;)

I've seen idiots get firsts and smarter people than myself working on building sites.

University is not some sort of intelligence test, it's an academic marathon of persistence, discipline, adaptation and little bit of craftiness! A guy on my course used to irritate the hell out me for some reason. He would go on and on about how he got drunk last night and how the assignments were a piece of ****, etc. But the barsteward was ALWAYS in the lab. He ALWAYS got decent marks. The guy got under my skin. The idea that people like that were coming out with firsts was just soul-destroying. But the sad fact is, he did the work and he did it well.

You still have to be intelligent to get a 1st. It takes intelligence + Hard Work. + the intelligence to realise you need to do hard work.

So the guy put the hours in and worked hard but played hard. Seems fair enough to me, can't quite work out from your post if you had a problem with the bloke or the fact he did the work to earn the grade??.
