Radeon HD 4870 X2 Might Feature 2GB GDDR5 Instead of 1GB

Will it need to map 2GB of mem though? If it's 2x1GB then wouldn't it just map 1GB of ram and then he card handles uploading the data to both sets of mem, hence the micro stutter issues. Can anyone with another X2 type card or xfire/sli confirm?

AFIK vista maps the memory on the graphics card whether you want it to or not.

I'm pretty sure that if you put two 512Mb 4850's in xfire then 1gb gets mapped so I can't see the 2gb 4870x2 been any different.

Gutting for people on 32bit os.

Has it been confirmed that Crossfire 4870's / X2 will use both banks/cards worth of memory?

With original crossfire didnt it just use one amount of gpu ram?

Wondering whether ATI will purposely only use 1GB (if they are indeed 1GB each cards) in total so mapping isnt as ram hogging for most people

No original crossfire it used both banks of mem as each gpu needs a full copy of the screen.

Here is some info:

R700 up to 80 % Faster than GeForce GTX 280
Pre-release performance evaluations suggest that the Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB GDDR5 model will on an average be 50% faster than the GeForce GTX 280 and in some tests 80% faster. A second model, the HD 4850 X2 (2GB GDDR3 memory, 2x RV770Pro) will also convincingly outperform the GeForce GTX 280. The R700 series will be brought into the market late-July thru August.

I have Also read that Nvidia will be going releasing thier new card early instead of boosting the gtx20 cards

WOW! just WOW. Also my mate said how will 2 gig on a graphics card effect 32 bit OS. he said it should have its own registry or something? :S

Well i have my system already and waiting for a new vid card motherboard and everything all wired in, just waiting on ram and vid card then i'll fire her up

Wishful thinking imo about 80% faster more like 30% faster then 280GTX I reckon...

Either way looks like they are slapping on 1gig and 2gig onto 4850s and 4870s now :)

I just hope they are out late july/august time frame.

4870 512mb is already just 10-20% slower than GTX 280, 4870 in crossfire already beats the crap out of it by lots, and that 2gb 4870x2 is going to be faster than 4870 in crossfire...

I can easly see the 80% faster, the price might be the problem tho, I guess we'll be looking at 400+ mark.

I'm thinking 2gb might well be overkill unless über resolutions - 2560 x 1600 or similar are being used. It may help as games become even more intensive, but by then this card will be old news anyway.

And remember, you don't need Vista to go 64bit. I'm running Windows XP x64 with 4GB physical and the OS sees the whole amount.

If you only have 1 or 2 GB of memory, using the 4870X2 won't cause you to lose memory. Actually, you might lose 256MB or so if you have 2GB of physical. Hmm - who want's to experiment?
