Will 1x4GB @ 1066 put significantly more strain on the NB than 2x2GB

currently using some 2x1GB Dominators and i want to upgrade to 4GB but im not sure if i should buy another 2x1GB set or sell them and get some 2x2GB

im using a DFI x48 @ 400FSB with a quad if that makes a difference

I ran 4 x 1gb with my x38 board with a quad and never ran into any problems currently running 4 x 2gb in the same setup.

Go with the 2 x 2gb then you always have space if you want to add more memory.

I would just get another 2GB extra if the motherboard has working RAM slots, mine unfortunately turned out to have a buggy one. It won't strain the NB too much and the money is best saved for something else.

2gb x2 so you can upgrade easily if you need it, and frankly 2gb x2 will retain it's value better if you come to sell it instead.

If you can sell them then I would go for the 2x2g option as I found that too much strain is put on the NB with x4 sticks so chances of being able to run the sticks at there rated speed decreases.

If you have the option, 2 x 2gb is better but, with a current chipset you "should" be able to get a pretty good OC running 4 up. But, 2 x 2gb and finding another use for or selling the 2 x 1gb is what I have done in the past.

I have just gone from running 4 x 1GB Ballistix PC2-5300 with an E8400, which I was able to o/c to 4.5GHz with the four slots occupied, to 2 x 2GB Team Xtreem (Dark) PC2-8500, and I was only able to o/c the E8500 another 5MHz with the 2 x 2GB sticks....so the 4 x 1GB Ballistix sticks were performing very well.

Actually that is more of an indicator that your memory controller was performing very well.
