Vista x64, ATI 8.5 - atikmdag crashes.

for me the issue was apparently aero - turned it off after having tried a number of things (underclocking, drivers only (no CCC), etc) and not had an issue since. CCC is back on, the card is overclocked and both screens are at different resolutions and rates.

i got the crashes whilst running single and dual monitors before, with the crashes being far more frequent when trying to run the second screen. not even a hint of a problem since with aero off, even if it doesn't look as nice.

the fact ati and nvidia both have this same issue is a bit odd, and worrying given that neither have a solution.

Are you running a dreamscene? if so then it best to install a different program to run them as if i remeber rightly it crashes with some ATI driver releases. Just cant remeber what the program is called.

i'm also having this issue with my shiny new 4850. (clean windows install with the 4800series hotfix drivers with nothing installed before). also had the same problem with my 3850 so for me, the issue is definitely with ati's vista x64 drivers and dual screens......

happened to me too on my 3870 with dual screens so i have yet to see it happen on my 4850 but im sure i will,

do any of you use aero?

could very well be, i have turned it off for the time being and i never noticed the driver crashes on my last vista install when i forgot to enable aero. as soon as i enabled aero a few days later they started.

i'll leave it off for now and see how it goes.

me neither.

Is this normal behaviour for a card that's on it's way out? I don't have access to another pci-e PC to test it. Worried I'll have to replace my 1900xtx now.

Well, when it started happening to my 2900XT when I placed it in two different pc's I decided it was probs a good idea to RMA and let some one else try and test it.

Hi guys - it turns out my original atikmdag crash was down to a faulty 2900XT.

I've now got a 4870 and after a week, I've just had the crash again, resulting in a bsod

I'm using 8.10 Cats.

Did anyone here manage to sort their crash problem out with their ATI cards? I had a 8400GS in my machine for a fortnight while my old card was rma'd and my system was totally stable :(

Could it be my psu do you think? I've got a 500w enermax liberty.

Hi Sam - I too have the same PSU as yourself and an HD3870 and I too get this driver crashing on me when playing Sup Comm using two monitors in-game.

I have been looking around for a solution and as yet haven't found anything definitive - I'm using vista 64 ... there were never any issues using XP 32 beforehand however!

CoH seems to be fine though although this doesn't use dual monitors, am thinking I might trying removing my o/c and maybe some RAM to see if that solves the issue.

Oh good, it isn't just me then. :D

Running a 4850 here on dual screens, and it keeps doing that atikmdag thing usually after a flickering screen or triangles of doom in a 3D app.

I'll try turning off Aero and see how that goes.

Edit: Err. Nope that didn't work. :(

Hi guys,

I've got dual monitors enabled (I use my TV as the second monitor) but I rarely use this feature? Sometimes I'll watch a DVD through my TV from my pc, but never do any gaming.

I'm using Vista x64 Ultimate (this problem definitely seems to be a Vista issue...) and I only ever seem to get crashes when on my desktop? The machine can be idle or I can be in the middle of doing something, which is really frustrating, especially if it bsod's and isn't able to recover! This only used to happen on my old 2900XT, I haven't had it happen to me on my 4870. Yet :(

So far with my 4870 I only had two straight bsod: 1x NON_PAGE_FAULT etc and 1x atikmdag crash, both times just in Windows (with Aero, but disabling doesn't seem to fix the issue). Gaming appears to be unaffected; played Far Cry 2 for about 2.5hrs last night faultlessly.

Im also running dual screens with a 4850 and Vista 64 and I get the atikmdag thing with flickering screens and sometimes this results in BSOD. I've never had it in games so far, just on the desktop, although Far Cry 2 does randomly crash to desktop? I dont know if this is related?

A friend with a 4850 and vista 32 is also getting similar issues.

Both running the Far Cry 2 hotfix drivers.

My driver crashes only seem to occur when playing sup comm and I don't think it has happened just on desktop or general light windows use.

Am going to try some possible remedies like taking out some ram and trying with only one screen etc.

It's not a Vista issue. I never had this problem with an 8800 gts just moved to 4870 now I get the odd random lockup. This is a driver issue. I am running 8.10 plus the hotfix for Stalker.

What I meant was, it's an issue in Vista - usually the x64 flavour.

I know people with similar XP x32/x64 setups and they're running fine :(
