Did my 4850 die?

Quite possibly the first on the forum talking about a technical fault with the 4850 :(

I was having a razz about with a eurofighter in Flight Sim X, settings where high for everything apart from the res, which i manually changed to 1600x1200, i was getting a nice 40fps, when i landed it and put on the brakes, my screen just went!. When i revved the engines i could hear the afterburners, so i assume it was my gfx card :( Was it probably due to overheating? Is there a way to have a game overlay of the gfx temp? I've restarted and it's back to normal.

Run 3D Mark 06 ( or the new one, Vantage?)

See if that causes the same problem. If it was overheating, PC would've frozen, so doubt it's that.

What PSU do you have, Frosted?

Well, i know for a fact my CPU cannot overheat, but the GPU could overheat, yes? As i understand there are no self-defenses to overheating GPU's other than to switch off?

I have a Hiper Type R 580W Modular PSU. My gfx card has its own devoted power cable coming right from the psu.

Graphics cards should throttle down when they reach a certain temperature. Your crash might not be indictive of hardware failures - my GX2 crashed a few times when I got it and has been fine since.

Yeah...use RivaTuner or EVGA Precision. Precision is probably easier to use. It will overlay your graphics card clocks as well which is handy to check that it's running as fast as it should be.

.

I wasn't talking about the CPU. And yes, your GPU does a few options to prevent overheating. One of them is the auto fan speed control. It speeds up the fans if it gets too hot. Also, in ATI's case, they cut the game off and put you back to the desktop if you get too hot. This is known as, "VPU Recover" under their CCP. However it has known to cause problems.

Check your ATi Control Panel and see if that option is there. If it is, uncheck it and try the game again.

Did you actually run 3D Mark, like I suggested you do?

Rob.

Edit: Spelling mistake. :o

VPU recover is on, and i have run 3dmark06 before with the same current system, no changes. Just now FSX crashed, so it might have been a bog standard game crash.

It has been known to cause problems like yours. That was a while ago, so I'm not 100% sure if they've fixed it. Turn it off and see. :)

alarm bells

have you changed the fan profiles on the card yet??? the default one isn't satisfactory and i wouldn't be surprised to see the card overheat.

On my Sapphire 4850 there are 2 tiny led lights on the back of the PCB, near the edge.

I was running the fur render gpu stress test when I was exploring overclocking it, and I watched the temp climbing ever higher whilst it was running. Eventually, and with no drama, the card just shut down and the 2 red leds were glowing on the card.

I shut down the pc and waited a few minutes, and it was fine and the leds were off.

It never crashes in gaming, looping 3dmark06 or ati tool though, but the fur renderer app is a very tough one.

If yours has got the lights, then maybe that would be a clue?

Yeah, i think i noticed a red led shine. There is nothing wrong with my PSU, I've had it for 2 years and touch wood another 3! Also, the default fan profile, is the only option to go with! If the GPU goes hotter than 100C it will apply 100% fan, it's automatic, and as far as i have seen, it has never let it go above 85C! It hasn't shut down since, so I'll just put it down to glitch in game.
