recommendations on a bike please

All well and done quoting figures but it's just willy waving. The difference is hardly noticeable (yes I have ridden a hornet and owned a bandit for a year) so can say that in my opinion. Ok the hornet has a bit better top end, however being as it's his first bike I doubt it's gonna make much difference at all. Oh and SV650 = small V twin = :(

The specs are irrelevant. They're all going to hit 60 in around 4 seconds and do a quarter mile in under 14. They're plenty fast enough, and which one will be slightly faster than the other really is besides the point.

I personally would be looking at ALL of them locally, and look for the best bike for your money that you feel comfortable riding.

OK Hornet is about 30% more powerful than the others. (90bhp compared to 70bhp)...

Though you wont be maxing any of those bikes out soon, there is certainly more room to grow into a hornet.

It is possible to find a well looked after hornet for £1200, but as with all entry level nakeds you need to check for corrosion that might arise from lack of care and being beasted through winter as a hack.

I can understand getting a sv650, though I do find them a tad girly with fairing. This is persona preference, they are meant to be great bikes that can be seriously fun too. A bandit however... BLEH.

Have a look at reviews comparing old model Bandits with its competitons, the only thing it had going for it was that it was slightly cheaper. I cannot think of a less appealing bike tbh.

edit- I'd echo riding them all though. the bandit might be a perfect body fit and suit you much better than the others...

After 15 years out of the saddle, I'm looking to get another bike and have been drawn to the Yamaha YZF600 Thundercat. More a sports tourer than race bike. I prefer to have some form of lower fairing.

I was offered a SV650 brand new by my local dealer for a shade over £4,800 otr. I had a sit on it and it felt quite nice (not too much weight pushing onto my ageing wrists:p)

Having more power is not all about going faster ... Helps a lot when you have a pillion ...More relaxed on longer journeys ... dont have to cog swap to overtake ..

also given even riders the Hornet whups the other 2 on a run ... May be similiar 0-60 times and stuff but in the real world the extra power and 30kg less weight makes a world of difference .

I only listed stats to give people not used to bikes an idea of the weight and power .... At the end of the day it what u like to look at ride...any of the 3 will suit but having owned the Hornet for a year and having ridden the sv and bandit all back to back a decent Hornet is the better bike ..

Persil

I hate bandits.

I realise I'm in a minority here, and they are hugely popular bikes, but I've ridden three, ranging from a 10 year old bike to an nearly new 07 and they have all felt incredibly cheap and naff. Out of all the bikes I've ridden they more than any other feel built to a very low budget.

Personally I'd go for the SV - better looks, much better sound and a nice driveable engine.

The Hornet vs Bandit argument can't be concluded until you ride both. You'll know which is the right one for you, engine and weight stats don't come in to it, it's all about how the bike feels for you.

Best response so far.
