Latest on 4870x2 ??

Well I can't see how they could make it too much more than 2x4870's so your looking at £340 for two of them so going by that you are probably right on the money.

However they may want to keep it under a certain "magic" price ceiling in which case we may be looking at 4870's dropping down to under £150 and 4850's dipping below the £100 mark

Well, at the moment we get the same price as in the USA on several 4850 and 4870 products when you exclude VAT (I often see £117.49 4850's at any rate, particularly PowerColor models).

So, 549/2 = £274.50 + VAT (or *1.175 = £322.53) a week after release I reckon.

damn its using 2gb vram, that means its still using crossfire, which means only 1gb of actual vram will be available for actual use like existing crossfire and sli solutions.

they need to sort that out so that the memory stacks up and gives the combined value. too much waste at the moment.

sigh, such a shame i dont think its feasable to spend that much on a graphics card to go with this system, it will be wasted. i think it would work on a 520watt power supply? ( corsair hx520 )

So 549 is about £280, add on the usual ripping off prices takes it around £350-£380 ?

Err there is VAT.

$549 = £281 + VAT = £331.00

Looking at the 4850 and 4870 which have now come down to exact conversion, expect the 4870x2 to be £350+ dropping to £331 within two weeks.

Looks awesome, but as there a few games that will actually take advantage of it, it is just e-viagra. I think I'd prefer a reduced price 4870.

People who have 30" screens will be interested and even 24" screens if you can play everything with lots of aa at a constant 60+ fps.

Or online fps who "need" 125fps will be happy with one of these too.

You might as well posted why does anybody need the power of a GTX280.

I do hope they show it off on Monday. I've been waiting for the 1GB 4870 for a while now. But since I'm planning to XFire I might just go for a single 2GB 4870X2. :D

Not everyone buys GFX cards to play games you know.

Also who does not want more speed?

Post's like this are so annoying.

Well, I agree, as the video stacking will be required to eliminate "microstutter". But consider this:

By doubling up the memory storage you allow the overall memory bandwidth to double. If both GPUs accessed a common data-store, you would have only half the bandwidth of an equivalent crossfire setup. Even with improved inter-GPU communication efficiencies, it would then be difficult to match the regular 4870 crossfire benchmark scores.

This would be a worthwhile tradeoff in my eyes, but benchmark scores are they key to getting sales, so it won't happen for a while.

The x2 will definitely be a better buy than 2 x 4870 CF. ATI have already said that the x2 onboard GPU bridge chip will work better than CF.

Sure, people use these for reasons other than gaming, and sure people want more speed. But there are times when it isn't econmical and the price v speed tradeoff doesn't make sense for a large majority.

Post like this are so annoying simply because not everyone else has your ponit of view and you believe that your opinion is 100% right and therefore everyone else must adopt the same position and pay homage to it.

There's a whole world out there, and guess what, not everyone agrees with everyone else.

Also, some words like e-penis and e-viagra just annoy some people, often striking a nerve.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love one of the new X2s, and am still waiting for the first reviews and solid stable drivers before making a decision. But with the games I play (I'm in the 'Crysis plays like pants whilst looking nice' camp) I don't see that the projected higher than expected cost for the X2 will make it the card for me, just the same as the GTX280 doesn't work for me. If this does work out to be the case, then it will be the 4870 for me, once the comparisons between 512mb and 1gb have been made.
