hi all
im about to build my first rig and would love your comments on parts.

Q9450
asus maximus ll formula
corsair dominator 4gb
sapphire ati 4870
segate barracud 500gb X2
tuniq tower 120
arctic cooling mx-2
thermaltake toughPower 850w
sony nec dvd rw silver X2 www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-024-OT

i want to keep the q9450 and the maximus but open to suggestions for the rest.
i picked the sony drives because im looking for ones with a silver front to match my armor case, if anyone has seen any with a silver front that are cheaper then let me know.
or if i can get the same performance with cheaper parts then that would be great cos im on a tight budget.

thanks all

the Q6600 to OC the nuts off it :)

Yeah, I'd go for an Enermax, Corsair or PC Power & Cooling PSU instead of that Thermaltake.

Better quality units.

And who said that ?

I was a lot happier with TTs than my previous corsairs and tagans, and for a lot lower price. The only better quality I would be sure of are enermax and seasonic , but then you gotta prepare for 100+ quid for PSU.

BTW 850 is a bit overkill, get the 750 version it will be more than fine even for 2x 4870.

I would swap the HDDs for F1s.
And do you have any reason for getting dominators apart from that they're expensive and got funky cooler on top? Doesnt mean they're any better than the half cheaper memories.

Are you going to do any heavy encoding/graphics/video editing etc ?

I guess not, you should consider getting E8400 or waiting a couple of weeks for the E8600 :).

thanks all so far.

yeah i wanted the Q9450 because im a 3d artist about to finish from uni so i do a lot of rendering witch uses the cpu not the gfx card. and i wanted the 4870 because other programs use that insted of the cpu. so i wanted both to be top end.

I picked all those part because i was told there the best of the best in my £1000 price range. And they all come in just under at £993

Thanks shaffaaf27 for that list but i don’t need a case.

not sure about the ram PhoenixUK was told it was the best and kind of liked the fact it came with cooler.

Isn't the new intel line-up coming soon? Basically the Q9450 will be replaced by the Q9550, with the exact same recommended price from intel (whether retailers don't put a bigger mark-up for the first week or so is another story). Best let you know so that you don't kick yourself later :)

edit: Oh, the difference between the Q9550 and Q9450 is a bit higher core clocks, not much but they *might* be more reasonable at overclocking (and if your not overclocking then its effectively a free speed bump)

Hey mrt88, welcome to OcUK Forums :) I don't see anything wrong with your setup barring that Thermaltake PSU, which you should replace with a Corsair one. You also won't be needing 850w, unless (and I have a sneaking suspicion you are) you're thinking of using Crossfire in the future.

Hope that helps mate ;)

Alright if you do this kind of work then Q9450 is definitely the choice for you due to extra cache.

I would go with the Thermaltake 750, they're great (imo better than HX620) and come with all the new PCIE connections.

About the GPU, those cards are designed for gaming so they won't do best job at what you doing. I don't think you will see any difference at all between 4850 and 4870 so might just as well save about 80 quid there.

For this kind of work you should also consider getting the professional card series which are made tu support this kind of work, these are called ATI Fire GL and Nvidia Quadro/Matrox .

They're mostly expensive but if you look around you can pick few models for around ~200. I would go with ati since Nvidia has silly prices on theirs :).

If you aint going for these type of cards you could just as well go even with the 3850/3870 I would say, no point spending cash on GPU which you won't use.

Also I will consider getting 8gb memory.

yeah thats a good point with the ATI Fire GL been looking at them.
But seen as i go to uni that mostly involves being ****** all night
and sleeping and playing games all day :D so thought i'd stick one of them in.

if i did get a Fire GL card at some point would my system be able to use it as well as a 4870. As in the 4870 for games and the Fire GL for work?

I'm not 100% sure but I think you can swap primary graphics cards over under display properties under Windows. The other card will be unusable though, and I imagine that will require a reboot.

Alternatively you could dual-boot 2 OS', one with one graphics card and one with the other, which might be useful as you could customise one Windows installation down to a small footprint to get the most out of your rig.

Or you could just shut down, swap cards over and turn back on, and have the drivers for both, but I've never done that so I don't know how well it would work!

The Fire GL/Quatro Series are great for what they're designed for, but for games they aren't very good at all in comparison to a mainstream gfx card.

No need, the FireGL will handle games fine as well.
Maybe not as good as 4870 but it will do just fine unless you want to run them at 1920x1200 on everything maxed out.

Especially if you went for the 5700GL (or was it 5600? the one with 512mb) i think, its about 250quid.

Depending on what 3D Application you mainly use, you should definitely consider getting a FireGL or Quadro for professional 3D work.

I have a 4870 in my newly built personal computer and while it performs fine in 3Ds Max (In Direct3D mode) the performance under Maya (OpenGL) when working with large scenes is poor. Working with the same scene at work where the PC has a Quadro 5500 the difference in viewport speed is amazing - granted, that card is very expensive but if you're doing it as a profession it's worth it.

i use 3Ds Max every day with a bit of maya here and there.
could you recommend one that that could handle scenes round the 1,000,000 poly mark. like the cheapest one that could handle that scene size in 3ds max because I’ve never looked into these cards before.
thanks :)
