Hello,

I currently have a Yamaha F310 that I bought about 5 years ago as a beginner guitar, and its now falling to pieces and sounds crap.

What would be the next good step up in terms of quality? I would like something with a cutaway. I have played a couple of higher end Yamahas which sound nice but just dont do it for me. I am trying to find somewhere I can have a play of a couple of Takamine's, though probably out my price range.

Can someone advise what I should be trying? Also, will the sound from an electro acoustic be ok unplugged? I'm guessing its just an acoustic with a pickup and a eq/preamp anyway.

Thanks,

Dave.

Although I can't really recommend acoustic guitars beyond Yamaha (which are fantastic value for money IMO) I can tell you that an electro acoustic sounds fine unplugged, it's just an acoustic with extra flexibility.

The only thing I would say is that I haven't yet come across an electro acoustic that sounds as good plugged in as a mic'ed but it's certainly very convenient for recording etc.

What is your price range?

I have one of these and it sounds very nice:

That looks like a really nice guitar, around the price I was thinking of. I'll need to go into the music shop try a few, problem is trying to find somewhere with a decent range.

Another vote for the Yamahas - I got an APX7 off eBay a couple of years back and it's a lovely little guitar. The APX one is a cutaway too (the body isn't as thick as a normal acoustic) so I find it easier to play, and it's still got a lovely sound to it. :)

Mine was an eBay bargain as well, £140 with a hardcase, I'd say it's pretty safe to buy a second hand Yamaha without playing it to be honest, their QC seems to be the most consistent out of all the guitar manufacturers I've tried.

By that I mean check that you like the model in a shop and then buy that same model at the cheapest price you can find online either new or used...if that makes sense.

For example:

£300 worth of guitar after a 2 min search :)
