i had an accident, when putting the cover back on my pc i left a wire in the cpu fan so it coulnd turn. doh! first thing i noticed was a burning smell so i checked my temps (motherboad 60C and cpu 64C).

i have since removed the wire and the fan now works. the temps are back to normal. i am worried that i have caused permanent damage though?

if the CPU works fine i wouldnt worry to much, but if your unlucky you have fried your CPU a little. How long did you let it on for? could be damage that aint gone do nout :)

bout 20 minutes, 64C isnt really that hot, i think the burning smell could have been the fan..

i played tf2 last night and it seemed ok, no screeen freezes

you cpu would be fine.. it would have throttled before any damage was done plus you would have heard an alarm going off to tell you the temps was to high.. Just keep an eye on the fan cause it might fail.. the burning smell would be the bushes..

Burning as in electronic or just plastic burning? If plastic then its likely the fan was getting slightly toasted from the hot sink as it was'nt being cooled.

Almost definitely the fan, don't worry.

EDIT: could've been just dust that got blown into your PSU though, that can smell a bit plasticky when it burns.

I accidentaly forgot to plug in the HSF one time, i started to get a burning smell, and then the computer shut itself down. I turned it back on and went into the bios, cpu reading was at 96c lol (burning might have been the thermal paste frying), but still everything is working as it should.
