So I'm deleting a couple of old files in the download folder, highlight 4 files and press shift+delete like I normally do. Vista deletes the entire Download folder?!!:eek:

I've no recourse as I turned off that system changes thing. Never been so frustrated at Vista. Grrr!!!

I would never use shift+delete personally - in case I made a mistake. At least if it's in the recycle bin you can undo it.

If you really need to get the files back, they will be recoverable though, if you haven't overwritten the disk space with anything else yet.

Get out of the habit of using Shift+Delete. Vista doesn't delete entire folders if you simply select files within it

I'm pretty sure you mean that if you're deleting an object bigger than the Recycle Bin limit that it will inform you that it's going to skip the Recycle Bin and just delete it. Which has nothing to do with selecting files within a folder and the whole folder being removed.
