Up until now, I have not had any alcohol at all in my diet.

Being 18, I have fallen prey to peer pressure and i am starting to go out a bit more.
Basically, i was just wondering what is the safest strongest drink that you can have which will not affect my sports lifestyle much? I was thinking alcopops and Vodka stuff etc as it does not contain the bloating chemicals like Beer does. Is straight Vodka quite a safe drink to have? I want to have a good time, but i really do not want to lose physique. I am still training every day and eating well etc.

Please give me your thoughts, guys :)

A nice bottle of dry white on a friday, saturday being a rest day and all that, is my sin - but I do run 20+ miles on a Sunday as a penance. Doesn't appear to do any harm.

I guess it's down to how often you want to 'have a good time'. Once a week and I wouldn't worry about it, unless you're drinking alcho pops :p

tbh it's all about moderation, your young and probably have a very low bmi so spirits will hit you really hard especially if you dont have a mixer. Avoid spirits because they dont last long cause most young ppl shoot them, the amount of effort it takes for your body to get rid of alcohol is high and the damage done by over drinking will screw up your training, if your serious about your sport, you really have to avoid over drinking. you would probably be safer having a couple of pints of lager/cider than anything else. Straight vodka is only safe in moderation, mind you there are about 2 vodka's in an average alchopop

You're 18 man, enjoy yourself. Treat yourself to a good bender with the lads once a month or something and you'll be fine.

main problem with alcohol is that it automatizes androgens into oestrogens, so drinking it increases your oestrogen levels and lowers your test levels... so yeah, coke :p

Didn't Vincent van Gogh cut his ear off or something after drinking that stuff? You don't get just drunk.

isn't the proper good absinthe stupid money over on this island? can get cheap bottles some places but the 'make you go loopy' stuff is expensive!

Alcohol isn't necessarily a bad thing for sports. Like any part of the diet it should be consumed sensibly. There are some health benefits, as well as the obvious drawbacks.

Firstly - don't get drunk / hungover before training or competitions. You will be dehydrated and aside from you feeling rubbish it will affect your performance.

Secondly - alcohol itself is a source of calories. Overconsumption can lead to weight gain, whether you're drinking beer or vodka. Watch the sugar in the mixers.

As for Absinthe - it contains wormwood, which is hallucanogenic (at least proper stuff does). Even in small quantities I can confirm that the effects are notably different from a straight alcoholic drink.

Pesonally - if I'm drinking and don't want to overconsume I get a nice single malt whisky. I like the taste of the stuff so much that I can't just down it and it slows me down a lot compared to beer or other spirits. Unfortunately many whiskys have oestragen like compounds in them so man boobs is a possibility... That and the nice stuff is a wee bit expensive...

also you need to take into account the effect of lower test levels due to drinking. a big session can cause a big drop for quite a few days, which is not what you want when trying to build muscle.

I always seem to have my best training sessions when hungover... I think it's something to do with all the calories??

Had 2x bottles of champagne and 3x bottles of red wine (Merlot) last night between two of us, as you can imagine that mix brings a nasty hangover! Had a McDonalds for pre workout and now I'm off to the gym :)
