Maximus Formula - multipler switches back to 6 in Vista :(

Just trying to overclock my Q6600 on my new Maximus Formula board. I've got the FSB to 360, which gives around 3.2GHz. But when I monitor it in AI Suite, I can see that something is automatically knocking the multiplier from 9 back down to 6

Sometimes it sits at 9 for a while, but mainly it is staying at 6.

Is there some setting in the BIOS that could be doing this? Or is it some kind of failsafe system that is kicking in?

Is it doing it when the chip is idle or under load? It could be Speedstep, I know when my wolfdale is idle it drops the multiplier to 6. Have a look in Vista's power options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Processor power management, then set max and min to 100%, should stop Vista using speedstep.

Edit: or like mr_x_plosion says look for the option in the BIOS to turn it off completely :p

Thanks, I'll see if i can disable it.

When I run either AI Suite or cpuZ, it seems to run at multiplier 9 for about 1 second, then drop back to 6.

Hmm actually I just tried doing what I suggested on mine and it doesn't seem to work. Probably best trying to find the EIST or speedstep option in the BIOS then.

look for a sub catagory called cpu information, that's where all the different options for speed step etc are, I uninstalled the asus AI suit, pointless piece of software that give incorrect values. It reckoned my qx6700 was using 250 watts, which if it was I could run the house central heating off!!!
