I don't think i've ever had a PC that hasn't been a right royal pain in the $%^&!!!! Am i jinxed? Does the man upstairs hate me??

My Asus P5K DLX died, so i've just bought an Abit IP35 Pro XE. If i try to set the SATA to RAID, it tries to boot windows from my drives but fails.. If i set SATA to IDE, it starts to boot from CD. It comes up with the 'Windows is loading Files' screen, and the bar goes up... Then goes to Windows Boot Manager.

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause... No, really?
To fix the problem:
1. Insert Windows Disc... HELLO!!!!!!! You were just booting from the damn disc!
2. Choose language
3. Click repair

If you do not have this disc yada yada yada.....

File: \Windows\System32\boot\winload.exe

Status: 0xc0000098

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

I've tried a Windows Memory Diagnostic from here, and it fails immediately, at 0%!?!

Has anyone go the slightest idea what could be going on? I don't think there's anything wrong with the memory, as it was fine on the Asus!?! Although i could be wrong, but have no idea how i'd find out!?!?!?!

Thanks for any light you can shed...

Iv just been having sooo much trouble with my raid drives and p45 mobo. so far i got it stable by upping the ICH voltage a couple of touches up. maybe you can try this too?

(assuming you are using intel raid)

EDIT: sorry it doesnt say you use raid does it..

My hard drives were raided originally (on the Asus), but i can't even load windows at the moment with RAID disabled!?! It's not playing ball at all... :(

Now the damn thing won't let me into the BIOS!!! I'm pressing del like a demented monkey, and it's happily ignoring me. And you all said this was a rock solid mobo? It's buggy as hell!

First Off, when you create a RAID, you change the way how data is handled, and also how the Hard Drives operate, once you create a RAID, install windows, you create a Master Boot Record (MBR) on those configured Hard Drives, Once you disable RAID, the MBR is broken, your data is also broken (Depending on what RAID). So windows wont boot, its not your mobo problem. its the RAIDs Design.

That is the Problem.. MBR is not valid. You will need to unraid them in the BIOS and reinstall Windows, Even if it was a standerd IDE hard drive, windows wouldent boot

Dont Press DEL like a demented Monkey, sometimes it will not enter the BIOS if you do that, sometimes it wont even get passed POST, ive had this on various mobos in my time

You're missing the point.. i KNOW the MBR is broken. I'm not trying to load it, i'm trying to do a fresh install, but i can't! The Vista CD will NOT load.. I can't get any option to re-format or anything!?! My 1st post describes the message that comes up. It starts to load then goes to the Boot Manager screen!

Formby, that's what i'd dearly love to do. :D

I've finally found a ctrl-i option (my memory sucks, and it's not in the manual lol)... But so far that doesn't work either lol! I'll reset the CMOS again, and try that.

Edit - 5 attempts and 2 CMOS clears later, and i'm finally in there yay! Hopefully it'll be plain sailing from here... You reckon? :D

great now we know you're not a newbie and you do know what you're doing.
what i do is strip down to 1 hd drive 1 dvd drive and if maybe try a install of XP to se if that hits any problems.

I haven't got XP... :(

The plain sailing was a bit optimistic lol!

Now instead of saying 'Boot from CD ROM' it says 'Boot from AHCI CD Rom'. Unfortunately that is the only change lol!

I'm now gonna completely do away with raid, and just try to set it up as IDE... Wish me luck. :p

No joy. Time to walk away from it for tonight, as i'm getting tempted to chuck it out the window now.

Cheers for the help all

thats the best option kep it simple first then if all is ok try to goto raid.
I once had a board mess me about like that would not install windows turn out to be the graphics card borked. Good Luck again could be a long night?

Firstly i'd like to say sorry for wasting everyone's time.. It turned out to be one of the sticks of memory... I stripped it all out and started adding things one at a time, and this time it wouldn't accept on of the sticks!?!

Thanks for all the help, i'm sure i'll be back in 10 with more problems anyway... :D

Oh if only.. lol!

I now get a BSOD while expanding the files, loading vista 64... :(

It comes up with Memory_Management, so i'm wondering if the other stick is also faulty!?!?!?!?! Or maybe it doesn't liket the timings.. I might just order some new memory tomorrow, and leave it til that arrives.

I could never work in IT... I've never had a computer that just loads first time, there's always some problem or other!?!

:P Well atleast you sorta narrowed it down to the RAM,
