Hi all,

I'm off on holiday in a couple of weeks and should get the opportunity to take photos of stuff like rainforests (and associated flora/fauna), volcanoes, waterfalls, butterflies, etc.

The kit I have already is:

Canon 350D
Kit 18-55mm lens
60mm prime
55-250mm zoom
~10Gb memory cards (think that should be enough!)
Battery grip + spare battery

I think what I need really are some filters and possibly a tripod, though I'm not sure how practical that will be as I'll be doing a lot of walking. I'd welcome whatever suggestions you guys have -- the last thing I want is to miss a good shot because I'm inadequately prepared! My filter knowledge is a bit lacking to say the least...

Consider a gorrilapod and definitely a circular polariser filter (gives more contrast and nice blue skies). You need the filter in a 58mm thread size for your kit lens.

I got back from my holiday (to Costa Rica) last week and have finally gotten around to sorting some of my 800 or so photos out. It's been a valuable learning experience! I ended up getting a circular polarising filter and a skylight filter to protect my new 55-250.

I ended up getting a lot of shots that are good holiday snapshots, and a few that I'm pretty pleased with. And some that aren't quite there, which is disappointing. Anyway, C&C welcome... just wish I could go back and take some of them again!

1) Bird from the summit of Irazu volcano. Thankfully the focus was pretty spot on!

2) I don't know what I like about this one, the background is a bit busy. But it's aesthetically pleasing to me. Again from Irazu.

3) Sailing to Tortuga. I like the CPL... :p

4) Happy troll face! Orchids are weird.

5) Tortuga tide.

I'll post some more later, as well as some of the 'nearly' shots.
