Hello,

I have concentrated so much on sorting out the hardware I would like to put in my new machine I have overlooked OS. I am happy with my Vista but I hear that the 64bit version can access more memory. So would this be the way forward for a gaming platform or does 32bit software not work on a 64 platform?

Generally speaking, 32 bit software works fine, 32 bit drivers don't.

That shouldn't be a problem as there are 64 bit versions of drivers if the hardware is well supported.

So far, I've not encountered any real problems with 32 bit software on x64 windows apart from the odd application that tries to use old or unsigned drivers.

only problem i have is with the flash plug-in for firefox 3, seems the adobe flash player wont work in Ffox3 under x64, no real problem, just means popping into IExplorer once in a while, theres a not on the adobe site saying the x64 plug is currently under development so lets hope its soon.

64bit is the way for sure, it can handle more memory and vista 64bit is in its own league compared to 32bit in terms of speed. But note to get the most out of 64bit version of vista you do need 4GB of ram as I found that out when going from 2GB to 4GB :).

eh? i didn't even realise there was 64bit version of firefox. 32bit version works fine on x64 with all plugins....

as for the OPs question. just go 64bit. there's no reason not to really unless you have some obscure old hardware that doesn't have drivers.

i would go 64bit , how much ram have you got including gfx card , if its above 3Gb deffo 64bit...

and also with ddr2 ram being so cheap it would be criminal not to buy 4gb of the stuff :D

I'm using vista 64. You can remove the Driver Signing issues with simply

Code:
bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
.

I can't comment on the performance differences, I've just come from an A64 4000+ - 1GB RAM - WinXP to my current Quad Q6600 @3.5ghz with 4GB of ram.

It's worth noting that I thought vista ran abismally on my old setup.

I had vista already installed on my new lappy so i have vista 32 bit already but got it free with laptop. Wonder if billgates will swap my 32 bit for his 64bit version :)

with ref to the firefox thing, it is a 32bit application - but for some reason the flash plugin even after successfully installing wont display certain flash content in a 64bit OS - the same with 64bit internet explorer - but the plugin still works withing 32bit interent explorer. if anyone knows a solution of some sort that's be great.

Flash Player 9 here from the official Adobe website, works perfectly.

Vista x64, FF3

? Are you sure you not just using Adobe 9 in IE 32bit on Vista x64, cos that works for me too, but Adobe dont have a working 64 bit flash player for IE x64 yet. Cant get it working in mine yet so am just using IE 32bit in Vista x64 until it has been released :)
