Boarding up loft - Advice

I have just started boarding up my loft to that I can store some things up there.

Anyone have any advice on what I should be weary of? Other than only step on the beams and dont fall through the roof.

I am just using putting up some chipboard down the middle, nothing heavy going up there.

What your doing is fine.
But if your up there, think about putting extra insulation in. At least the full height of the beam before boarding it up.

Also what thickness are you using?
Better to board it all out if you have the time and money.

get a cheap mask, there is tones of dust up there, esp when you start moving / cutting things.

The boards are 18mm thick. The insulation is jammed in to the beams. No more room in there.

I was thinking about boardin it all out but I have come across some pieces of wood that overlap the beams. I cant see any reason why I shoudnt be able to just trim them off. Think that would be ok?

Well they dont touch anything. They look like extra strength bits that have overlapped. I guess they couldnt be bothered to make it all even.

Your taking all the fun out of it.

I say he should remove any bits of wood that are in the way so as to have a nice big area to move around in

when I did a part of mine , I couldn't be arsed screw them down, so I nailed them down. I thought I had done a good job until I went back down and looked up at the ceiling to see lots of bits of plaster hanging down off of the plasterboard nails. screw yours down.

I almost went through the loft once, ******* hurt

my hip was literally black within a week.

Missed a beam while shifting some stuff.

Aye the smell gets pretty bad. It's like sticking a prawn in the curtain rail when you're moving out of the ex's place

You can get flooring grade chipboard, I'd use that instead of normal chipboard.

Are you boarding the "walls" and ceiling too? If so use plasterboard not hardboard, our house was done before we moved in with hardboard and it is all warped, my parents house was done over 10 years ago with plasterboard and it's still fine.

Watch out for asbestos if your house is quite old. It's rather nasty stuff.

Make sure all board you lay are laid broken-bond. Never ever have 4 corners meeting !

try to mark where cables are going makes life so much easier if you need to pull stuff up

I have fallen through the ceiling, broke two ribs. Nice loft conversion when finished though. Even had a spiral staircase

The main thing to remember is to always allow more room for the track than you think you're going to need as you will always want to add another line, another station, a central switching box for the points etc. and you'll kick yourself when you run out of room.
