Hi all

My parents would like to buy us some knives for our wedding, and are happy to spend around £250.

For this price, we don't need ten different cheap knives, but would need:

- chef's knife
- carving knife
- 2 x small paring / utility knife
- sharpener / whetstone
- block or magnetic rack

What do people feel we should be looking at in this price range? I've seen Globals (JL said they just brought out a new range and the new ones are more expensive - why?), Henckels (which range is the best?), various Sabatier vatiations, but I'm in need of some first hand user advice please.

If the cost goes slightly over it's not a huge issue, but ~£250 is the guideline please :).

Costco have a nice Global set with a sharpening stone for £160 inc VAT. I am told the normal retail price of the set is £250+, so it's worth the membership fee just for that.

i.o Shen knifes are meant to be amazing and is the next ones I'm going to try.

I.O.Shen 6.5" chefs knife £42.95
I.O.Shen 105mm Pointed Paring Knife £26.95
I.O.Shen 170mm Boning Knife £44.95
I.O.Shen 200mm Flexible Filleting / Carving Knife £49.95
I.O.Shen Dual Grit Whet Stone £29.99;

£195
Leaving loads for a magnetic block.

One of these to hang them on

And that would leave you enough for another blade. I would suggest either a bread knife or a broad Chinese slicer.

I.O.Shen Oriental Slicer Knife £49.95

What ever knife you get, go and try one in the shop. It wont tell you how it cuts which is 80% of a knife, but it will tell you how it feels. As a lot of us don't like the handles on globals.

Wusthof, probably get a decent set for £250

Agree that Wusthof are fab, but it is essential to try knives for yourself. You may not necessarily get all the same make for each knife as what suits you in one size may not suit for another. Go along and see what fits your hands and find out what weight you like.

I love my Global knives, but haven't got on with some others. Nothing worse than having a decent knife that you can't use because it doesn't sit right in your hand. You do need to go and handle a few before deciding.
