Looking to get a DSLR but 2nd hand. I cant beleive how much prices have fallen from a few years ago :)

Anyway, I saw this, and wondered if its good value:

CANON 20D Body (boxed)

EFS 18- 55mm ( come with canon 20d kit)

70-300mm F4 Sigma (boxed)

28-105mm F3.8 Aspherical Sigma (boxed)

1GB CF memory card (Ultra II)

Lowepro Bag

Mint conidtion . no faults.

All for £400. Worth a punt?

From the looks of the price and kit, 400inc would be a good start up kit.
I also got myself a Canon 20D as my first camera and so far, it's been great. Easy to use, fast to operate and does what I want it to do. (apart from the self-timer, damn 10 seconds only is too long for my liking. 2secs is perfect)

Anyway, I would go down the 20D route solely for the kit present, it's enough to cover you for a range of focal length till you're needing sharper lens in a more specific range before you invest.

The Canon 10D is ok but for that price, it's abit too expensive. I got my Canon 20d body for 220inc. The extra megapixel from the 20D would be handy if you're snapping for bigger prints - also boost resale-ability when you do decide to upgrade.

The kit lens isn't the best but it works. I personally have the 18-55mm IS version, definitely optically sharper than the non-IS version but still have similar barrel distortion down at the wider focal length.

Not tried the other sigmas, so no specific comments.

Have a barter abit, see if you can push it lower yet :p

doesnt look too bad, i got £450 for my 20d, 50mm f1.8 and a sigma 17-70 + bag and cf card not so long ago.

will this be your first DSLR? if so you wont be dissapointed, the 20d is a fantastic camera with awesome image quality/features. as for those lenses i cant comment because ive never used any of them.

I'll second the notion that the 20D is a great camera. I've been using one for about 2 years now i think...

Also to help give you a base for pricing... I've just bought my Dad a 400D (body only) for £220. Based on *** price of the 400D, and the "job lot" you're looking at, I would say that the 20D plus lenses would be worthwhile, if you think the lenses are what you think you would like to use long term (lens envy is a horrible affliction) ;)

cheers guys, confirms what I was thinking. Useage with will be scenery with occasional telephoto (eg airshow). £400 seems a decent price and I won't have to spend much more, probably just a filter or 2

technically 3 filters for the zoom lenses and maybe save abit for a nifty fifty, 50mm f1.8 lens, cheap and works a wonder for low light photography - if you need it. Also does great portraits (with blurred background and focused on subject's face)

well considering my current budget i shall shortly be investing in a second hand 20D (most likely from the bay). They seem to be quite good value for money atm

I really don't understand why people go for 400D etc now when 20Ds are such a bargain. They have solid build quality, better ergonomics (the thumb wheel alone would do it for me), fast and just more SLR like.

20D is definitely worth the little bit extra over the 10D. My 10D frustrates me with it's slow buffer, inferior AF and slower frame rate. Definitely go for the 20D, good buy.

Some people find (or innocently buys into) the need for bigger megapixel and LCD screen, they would trade off what the 20D have for that.

The only downside the 20D have imo is the small LCD screen and view finder. Otherwise, it's an awesome beginner's camera. I picked mine up, played for an hour or so and got familiarised in a snap.

Oh and this site is very useful for 20D owners.

I learnt a trick or 2 with that page.

I went for the 400D for my Dad as opposed to the 20D (which I own), primarily due to the body size. The extra MP is useful, but certainly not cruicial, and my Dad will find the larger LCD very beneficial.

I think it's certainly a horses for courses this time :)

20D is a great camera! I've been using mine since 23rd Oct 2004 (date of IMG_0001.JPG) and haven't felt the need to upgrade yet. The 30D and 40D didn't look even remotely worth the cash.
