Call to reduce alcohol level to zero for young drivers

Firstly the law should be the same for everyone.

Secondly I believe if you are going to be driving you should not even touch a drop of alcohol.

Obviously the law should not set the limit to zero because it has to allow for tiny amounts of alcohol such as mouthwash, food with small amounts of alcohol, etc. but it should be set low enough to mean people cannot have a pint and then drive.

If they're going to come up with a rule it should be a blanket one not just young drivers.

I'm fully in favour of a 100% ban or 0 tollerance. It works in Germany, even if you're sat in your car and not driving, and you're over the limit and some one runs into you and it's 100% their fault you still get done if you're over the limit... doesn't sound very fair I know, but I've had people close to me turned into brain damaged semi paralysed people owing to being hit by a drunk driver - I feel quite irrational about it I do admit.

There is no excuse for drink driving. And mouthwash and that sort of thing wouldn't trigger a breathalyser, in the remote chance that it does, when you got to the station the proper machine would clear you. Besides you can still ask for a blood test can't you? Besides most cops aren't mugs and you can tell so easily from the driving and the way that people behave whether or not they have been drinking.

It may be a little reactionary or extreme, but I'd almost be inclined to ban for life if caught drink driving.

I've had some serious disagreements with friends over drinking and driving of which has caused some falling out - but frankly I can't be around people that are so selfish.

+1

I think that if anyone drinks then they should not drive. Period. My Dad died when I was 6 because he was drink driving so I have always said to myself that I would never drink and drive, even the smallest amount.

I'm a lightweight anyway, so I am drunk very fast :p

Think it depends on the situation. If you're swigging a 1 gallon bottle of cider and beer cans rolling on the car floor then yes lifetime ban.

It won't make any difference, because the lack of concern for road safety means that there aren't the police on the road to monitor bad driving, drink driving etc as they have been replaced with speed cameras that don't actually target the causes of accidents.

Hurrah for more dangerous roads!

Wow so once your 21 you cant get drunk!!!?! Why has this never been mentioned before?

Im against this proposal if it's just for 17-20, but am for it as a rule for everyone. As everyone has said, same laws for all please.

Im sure overall through out the country this age group is bad for drink driving, or least i hope that is the case or why are they/we the ones being picked on. However in my experience to date this age group is the best behaved in terms of drink driving. Its become very sociably unacceptable and people have become very good at using designated drivers. From what i find the elder generations are much happier to go and have a few pints and then drive. I am guessing though that when it comes to having 4, 5, 6 or more pints and driving it is more likely to be a problem in the younger drivers but as said im just going off own experience rather than national averages.

I have similar experiences, the generation of 45+ seem to drink drive a lot more often than 17 - 20.

I too would argue that it would be the over 40s that would be more likely to drink and drive, mostly due to not being educated to the extent younger drivers have about the dangers of drink driving almost from day one.

This just seems another way of targetting the young drivers who are already penalised heavily via the probation period, huge insurance costs etc. Whilst drink driving is completly unacceptable, I think there does need to be an allowance for some amount of alcohol to be in the system. If only for instances where you are driving the morning after having a couple of shandys the night before.

That would be ageist I guess.

I'd suggest that they move it to all people regardless of gender, age, etc.

I'd also suggest that the punishment made harsher. A guy who hit a colleague at work a couple of months ago (coming out of a road, 3 times over the limit, causing a 4 car pile up and then tried to run off from hospital) only got a £1,000 fine and banned for a year. Absolutely beggers belief because he could have killed a hell of a lot of people. He came racing out on to a 50MPH road.

Crazy country we live in.

All cars should have ignition tied to a breathanalyser - problem solved (volvo demonstrated years ago that this is possible), and car manufacturers tied (legally) to a very low level of alcohol.

Why should I have to go through hassle like that every time I want to drive, coupled with the expense of replacing it when it fails outside of warranty?

Government subsidies for free replacements.

Why? So that there are no drink drivers.
