Weston-Super-Mare - What's it like?

Since there seem to be a lot of Bristol area peeps on this board I was wondering if anyone could help me here.

I've applied for a job in Weston-Super-Mare (from here to be referred to as WSM), (currently living in Bath) and after looking into train fares, it's gonna cost about £20/day, or just over £1k for a 6 month season ticket, plus 1hr travel each way =/

Looking at house prices in WSM it seems much cheaper, 1 bed flat/house = £3-400, 2 bed = £4-600, currently paying £600 for a 1 bed flat in centre of Bath, and some extra space (and beer tokens!) could be nice.

Anyway, was hoping for some insight into what WSM is like to live in, general things such as:

What are the people like - is it mainly chavvy/alternative/families/old people etc?
Local entertainment/nightlife - live music/bars/clubs etc?
Shops - is there anything decent, or would that involve a trip to Bristol?
And then just the general environment; parks/how clean is it/noisy etc?

Also, if there are any areas to avoid, or nice areas to try to live in?

Any replies greatly appreciated :)
 
from my experience:

What are the people like - chavvy/old people, depends where you are really
Local entertainment/nightlife - Pathetic! (this is where the chaviness kicks in)
Shops - They have something like the galleries in Bristol (a lot smaller mind you) and some half decent shops so youll be ok but may have to venture to Bristol every now and then.
And then just the general environment; apart from the sea front I wouldnt have a clue.

So yeah dump :D
 
Ha, it is shocking
I used to live somewhere worse a few miles down the road, but WSM is a dive

Best way to enjoy it - get a R5 GT Turbo or a Nova GTE, get a massive exhaust and do the sea front loop 40 times a night ;)
 
but then again, it's next to the sea - don't think i can ever live anywhere that i can't see the ocean..
 
I lived there until i was 18, moved 6 years ago to little village 6 miles away.

It's chavtastic.

There is a few clubs but they have become infested with kiddies. Beach is made of fail (well, poo actually), has shopping centre but if you want anything good you will drive to cribs in Bristol.


Few golf courses, 10 pin, rileys, arcades etc

Town flats are mostly full of drug rehabs. The nice area is at the top of Weston looking down onto the beach of fail.

Some really bad areas, some ok areas.

Muddy discusting dog s***t ridden limp excuse for a beach, 2 horrible clubs playing comercial RnB all night - both full of idiots, boy racers doing the sea front and cinema circuit then gathering at the local mc donnalds car park, tacky bucket and spade shops, limited shopping although just about passable, windy.

On the up shot, I believe there is a brothel next to Arc taxis office....:eek:

don't know about a brohel but there is cerainly one of the world's skankiest strip clubs
