Hi All,

My E39 sport is currently at dealers for abs/traction control problems, and have just been informed that my rear tyres are also on the limit.

Just wondering if anyone can remember the standard size for them (I think they are 255 ?? 17 on rear) as I would rather not pay dealer prices!

Many thanks for your assistance.

Simon.

They are 255/40/17 and a quality tyre should cost you about £130 per rear tyre.

As for your other issue I'm going to make a guess at a faulty wheel speed sensor. Let me guess, you've got the DSC and ABS light lit whilst driving?

Thanks Fox,

You guessed correctly!
DSC light plus intermittent ABS warning, whats more fun is when the ABS light is on the Speedo does not work either! I'm hoping it's just a sensor as you say rather than a ABS module failure.

I have Goodyear Eagles on the front so will probably match them up on the rear.

Cheers
Simon.

Speedo not working as well? Wheel speed sensor for sure - the speedo is driven off signals from the wheel speed sensor. If one is faulty you can get a non functional speedo. It's reasonably cheap and easy to fix. Don't let them do anything stupid like replace the DSC Hydro unit until they've ruled out the wheel speed sensor.

Wheel speed sensor is a common E39 failiure point.

I prefer them as BMW intended ;)

Well the good news.........

Actually there isn't any although the dealers have cleaned my floor mats nicely.

The bad news........

They are 99% certain that it is a fault with the DSC Hydro control module now this from Chandlers in Angmering Sussex by the way comes in at a wopping £1700 fitted and calibrated:eek:. They are quoting 1350 for the control module itself, now I think this very expensive as I thought they were more like 5 or 600. I am definitely going to get a second opinion before splashing out that sort of money so if anyone knows a good garage with the necessary equipment in Sussex I would be very grateful.

If it is the DSC Hydro unit then there is a company which can recondition and repair your existing unit for about 100-200 quid - far less than 1700.

Not sure if thats your exact unit but surely worth calling them.

Definately get a second opinion. I'm not saying the hydro units never go but a wheel speed sensor is a far, far more common occurance on an E39...

They are about right on the price for a new DSC unit but BMW also list a repair kit for the DSC hydro unit at about 600 quid. The part number is 34 52 6 769 862, FWIW.

So, don't panic completely, even if it is the DSC unit I'm confident you can get the car fixed for, at the most, half your current quote.

First step is to prepare a worst case scenario quote - give Scothall in Hampshire a call and ask them for a quote to replace/repair the hydro unit. If your car is an 02 plate or older, they'll give you 10% off parts costs and 50% off the labour cost which would be a significant saving.

How old is the car and whats the mileage?
