The Qur'an - Tonight C4 8pm

Just exploit all the religious books for what they are, books of fiction.

and my mother's boyfriend is a Muslim, so I like to think I know a bit about the subject.

This is the part of religion i find fascinating, I know several quite strongly religious (all Christian though) people, and nearly all of them has their own ways of doing it (most just being either catholic or protestant) yet the one person who i would consider the most "Christian" (involved with youth groups will help anyone, and is truly the nicest person i have ever met) doesn't really follow any church he has his own wired view of it, he's tried explaining it to me many times but i always get lost. It's amazing though, that the one who doesn't really believe in all the pomp and cerimoney of the church is the one I would consider the closest to what Jesus would want from a Christian.

I will be watching. However I expect it will be biased rubbish. Would be good if someone who knows these things watches and comments on it.

Indeed. One Christian I know simply takes that Jesus said we should help people and each other, so thats what they spend their time doing. Great guy.

In addition, an old flame of mine was a muslim, however a self described non-practising one. She followed her religion much like the aformentioned Christian.

Yeah my mum's boyfriend is hardly what you'd call a typical Muslim.

He does not go to Mosque (though donates some of his money), he drinks alcohol (but he does not eat pork), things like that. But he was raised in a strict Sunni Muslim household and continued to follow it into adulthood, so he is a wealth of information about what that branch of Islam is really about and whatnot.

I'm not going to get into details, but not everything he says is nice at all.

That because most churches are more cultural than actual religion. Hence why people who don't follow a certain denomination. Our generally more level headed and truer.

Another fine example of "religious" people picking and choosing the bits that suit them.

No, more like Channel four tries to disguise trash TV as intelligent veiwing.

Lets not forget when they put 'ordinary representive people of Britain' (in reality, a man who frequents a strip club, an outrageously camp man, and other assorted horrible chav-esque people) in a house to obey the rules of Islam for a week.

It was embarrising, the guests didn't even try and were incredibly rude, yet Islam was still made to be the culprit.

I didn't see that one, but it sounds more like another ghastly reality tv show than anything serious. You have to admit that there have been plenty of genuinely intelligent documentaries on C4. C4 is the only mainstream broadcaster that has been asking the serious questions of Islam that many of us are asking to ourselves and close friends and family.

So basically he just isn't very devout?

I'm not saying a bad thing, but there doesn't seem to be anything unusual there. He just doesn't sound all that bothered.

Nah he's not that bothered at all, mainly considers himself a Muslim by association.

IMO this makes him a good source of unbiased, inside information.

The Qu'ran is so open to interpretation anyway. People get so wrapped up in a small minority of extremists that they like to judge these as a whole or large section as opposed to the minority they are.

I generally stay out of these kinds of threads on here because many people are incredibly uninformed on World Religions but like to stick their noses in and throw a few insults around here and there without retribution.

Some of you should real the Qu'ran, you'd be surprised.

I take channel four always with a pinch of salt. The one which started it for me was their infamous global warming documentary. Regardless on what anyones view is regarding that issue, it was so nausiatingly biased that global warming wasn't happening it was terrible.

There was uproar by many academics which were mis-quoted and their words spun. It was basically "Michael Moore".

Perhaps they should be credited for adressing this issue, but I will only credit them if it is done well and fairly,, which is exactly how all documentaries should be credited.

Not sure yet, I have found most of these programs about religious topics recently have been very biased and rubbish.
Likewise.

have you ever done it? It's massively difficult to read religious texts in anything other than their native languages due to th awkwardness the formally very poetic words has in English (or any other language).
