... maybe some people shouldn't do their own mechanical work, no matter how basic.

clicky

fixified for login purposes.

Now I really should have checked this carefully. When I replaced the discs and pads and refitted the little L-shaped retaining bar to my rear brake pads I should have made 200% sure it was correctly done, rather than assuming that how they were fitted to the car was correct (I replaced them the same way they came off the car...). I could easily have done this by looking over at my 205 GTi on the drive which has an identical set of rear brakes as my HDi.

Ohhhhh no, why would I do a sensible thing like that... :noo:

Anyhoo, 600 miles later I hear a slight scuffing noise. Try to stop at some lights and the pedal goes to the floor, pull handbrake and it comes up alarmingly high but stops the car. In the middle of traffic so had to pull away to find somewhere to stop.

BANG.

In the rear view mirror I see a few flashes of something metallic coming out from under the back of my car and a loud banging from the NSR wheel. I had just had new tyres fitted at Protyre the night before so there's me thinking I've lost a wheel or something.

Once I manage to stop this view greets me under the bumper:

These were liberally distributed over the road behind (brand new disc!):

And eventually a very freindly chap from the AA turns up to help:

I won't go into the horror story of the garage I took it to but let's just say I could have saved me £250 if I had got the AA to tow it home and I had fixed it myself.

All I can say is an expensive lesson learned, double check everything ESPECIALLY brakes! The bar was refitted exactly how it was fitted before, I think the old brake discs were so worn the lip around the edge held the pads in place.

Be safe.

Don't see how he did all that damage by fitting a slightly worn pad retainer bar.

Looks like the caliper has sheared off it's mount, did he not do the caliper up properly or something?

Exactly.

I don't see how he could do that either.

I'm suprised the disc ended up like that since it is 'new'...

This is on 205gtidrivers I think. I've done my rear brakes last week, used the same set of spring clips and retainer bars, no problem. You also don't need to undo any part of the caliper to swap the pads/disc.

Something amiss with the caliper I reckon.

I dunno, if the pads worked out of the caliper and wedged into the wheel, I could see it being messy.

I'd be suprised (and disappointed) if it sheared the caliper off though, I rather imagine it'd just push the pads back in or fling them out.

I vote for unrelated mechanical failure as well.

To be fair, the rear calipers that are fitted to the 205/306 have been known to chuck rear pads out.

I know the guy who's car it was, and he's certainly not a complete noob, has done a fair bit of his own work, including an Mi16 engine conversion on his 205.

Strange, I've changed the pads on the back of my HDi but not the discs.. and can't quite figure out whats gone wrong with his

306 Hdi f.t.w though.. just look at that lovely car ;)

EDIT - That piston shaped thing in the midle of the " cracked disc piccy " looks like the piston that comes out the caliper, you have to wind it back it with a screwdriver.. maybe the pads fell out and the piston somehow jammed against the disk ?
