OK, I'm still deliberating about wether or not to stick with the 'teg, if I do sell it I'm seriously considering going down a different road, I have a real love of old Jap cars at the moment and cliched as it is, I really like the AE86. I know they are stupid money for a slow old Toyota, but I still want one :o

I have spotted this one, it looks like great condition example:

Do they all have an LSD? What about running costs, are they reliable?

Don't really know much about the car (about from rubbish translations/explanations on initial d :D) but the engine is the same as that's in my MR2 that I did a bit of research on and it seems to be very reliable and also it has a non-interference design in that if the timing belt snaps no damage is done!

four and a half grand!!!!

I know, they are crazy money for what they are. But I still want one :(

The AE86 is something you either 'get' or not. To some people they are just old Toyotas that aren't particularly fast. To others they are classic Japanese cars, with a fantastically balanced chassis and a bullet-proof engine.

Out of the frying pan & into the fire.

LOL, you're probably right, I fully admit that I fail when it comes to sensible car buying decisions :(

Really not worth the money. As standard an uninspiring, distinctly average, underpowered RWD Japanese hatchback with overinflated scene tax.

I wouldn't say no to one but the price puts them bang into cars I'd rather have 2, 3 and 4 times as much.

If I was forced to buy something like that though, I'd rather save 3k and buy a really nice Nissan Silvia S12, which is much the same except turbo'd. Even looks much the same.

Assuming it stays a popular car, you probably wouldn't actually lose much so although it's expensive for what it is, if the scene tax remains, you would make that back when you sell it.

The S12 just doesn't 'do it' for me. I know it looks very similar to a Trueno, but the proprotions just aren't quite as 'right'. Besides, I like the look of the Levin (fixed headlights) more, particularly the saloon.

that interior is ugly even by jap standards

Yes it is. But then again it is a 1985 car. The fact that it's so 80s is part of the charm for me.

TBH I'm not really looking for opinions on wether these cars are worth what they fetch, like I said it's either something you get or don't. I'm more interested to know about the practicalities, ie: reliability, known issues, how suseptible (sp?) to rust they are etc.

All i know rust wise is they get quite bad at the rear behind the bumper.

To be honest I can't imagine it being massively un-reliable as its mid 80's. If you go and get yourself a mk2 golf gti you wouldnt expect many issues other than wear and tear. I'm guessing most have had a hard life though so its probably nice to give it new bushes and everything.

I love these cars as well, 80's boxy and plastic is brilliant. But the interior get me on these, well the seats. I just wouldn't want to sit on them, they look unhygienic.

Engine wise can't you put a mr2 supercharged engine in there? Still having problems with your integra drexel then?

Teg to AE86? I wouldn't. As nice as they are, just arn't worth it. Unless you want to go drifting.

I know 2 guys who have them, and they say they are by far the best fun cars they've ever owned. These guys like going sideways though. I think if you dont like going sideways then they're a bit pointless.
