Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz + task manager?

If you decide you want to update your computer manually rather than reinstall - Do the following

got the device manager. Choose the + sign next to the Computer device.
Right click on the Advanced Configuration And Power Interface (ACPI) PC, and choose Update driver.

Then Choose "Not at this time" when being asked to check Windows Update.
Click "Next"

Then Choose "Install from a list or Specific Location (advanced)
Click "Next"

Then Choose "Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install"
Click "Next"

In the next list choose the top option, which should be "ACPI Multiprocessor PC"
Click "Next"

Follow the instructions that popup (you might need a windowsXP CD/DVD) and this will install your system as a Multiprocessor system.

NOTE: Only try this on ONE system and make sure you dont have any Data which you are currently using for any projects your on - as although this wont damage your data, if the process has issues you might not be able to get to the desktop after you change the configuration. This is unlikely to happen but just in case ;)

Hope you have some luck with either of the solutions

Cheers

OK an old thread but still not resolved. I have tried the "Force in a system HAL" method from this Microsoft (booting from a Windows CD) Linky. But after I press "F5" then chose "ACPI Multiprocessor PC". It says, "halaacpi.dll could not be loaded. Error code 1024"

Can anyone shed any light on this?

if you format and re-install it should pick up the right hal

Was hoping that there would be an alternative available, as formatting is not an option for me as it is a office PC at work. So only IT can do that (and they are not doing anything about it)

Ok I tried replacing (system32/hal.dll) halacpi.dll (ACPI Uniprocessor PC) with halmacpi.dll (ACPI Multiprocessor PC) in safe mode, rebooted and borked the PC. So had to whip the hard drive out plug it into another PC and swap back the original hal.dll All works again. But still back to square one.

Now how do I tell Windows XP to update the HAL? I have read stuff about sysprep and seen this: UpdateUPHAL="APCIAPIC_MP,%windir%\inf\hal.inf"

Can anyone tell me if they know how to do this?

You have an IT dept yet you are messing around with system settings and .dlls...

You'll be popular, if you bork it (like you have) have you considered the consequences?

Yes I have.

Still looking for advice though. If I work out a simple method that does not involve reformatting, IT will implement it and do the other 20 odd PC's that they also didnt setup properly.
