John Carmack announced that id Software had entered new publishing deal with EA.
E3 2008: id Software, the developer credited with pretty much inventing modern 3D graphics as used in computer games and the maker of the Doom, Quake and Dangerous Dave franchises has just signed a new publishing deal with Electronic Arts.

John Carmack himself took to the stage during EA's E3 opening address and announced that id Software had broken away from games publisher Activision, who had previously published many of id's games, and formed a new publishing partnership with EA.

Carmack was keen to stress however that the relationship between EA and id Software is only a publishing deal - the company has not been bought out by EA as BioWare and Pandemic were.

EA is now the official publisher for id's new racer-cum-shooter, Rage - and possibly Doom 4 if the new deal lasts long enough.

"This will give us full access to EA's worldwide marketing muscle without taking away our ability to build games the way it should be done," Carmack explained.

"Rage represents a new direction for our games," id CEO Todd Hollenshead said in a statement. "Rage is a shooter unlike any other, developed on our cutting edge new technology, and built to the exacting standards id is famous for. We're excited to have the support of EA Partners to launch Rage on the world."

sorry off a site that might be classed as compeitor

ID havent done much in the last few years anyway infact looking at there wiki they havent really released that many game in there lifetime anyway.

carmack is overated imo

Dont think i ever liked anything by "id" anyhow so they can crawl in bed with the devil for all i care. Bioware, relic, ppl like these devs do better games.

They are basically saying they are going to be making all the gaming decisions and EA will be their Publisher who will be responsible for just promoting the product. I can't say that's a bad thing.

No deadlines or hassle from EA, just them selling the game. That's the best that can happen really. Look at Orange Box - that was published by EA and well-recieved.

EA aren't going to get away with bullying iD, they aren't some small dev desperate for anyone to publish so that they jump through hoops for peanuts. EA's only role in this is in recieving the gold disc "when its done" and make a trillion copies of it and then making sure everybody knows about it.

You must now provide EA with a copy of your birth certificate along with a signed photo of you holding a legitmate copy of Doom 4 before you can play it. You'll also need to do this again once every 2 weeks or your game will be locked-out.

Hopefully, EA is really bad in some occasions. ( see what they did to sim city ffs)...

If you are enough of a tool to really think John Carmack is overrated, I suggest you go read up on:

- the amazing games he has made
- the extremely successful games that used the engines he created
- the insanely popular mods that were developed from those successes
- his innovative approaches to game engine programming which is used by every developer you can think of
- his passion and massive influence in the development of the technology behind games both hardware and software

Just look at his latest effort with Tech5... whilst every other developer is crying and moaning about how difficult it is to multi-platform develop, he has solved it by just having the engine render a single set of game code and art assets to be used for any current gen console and the pc.

ID have been rubbish for some time. There past is glorious but if you can't keep it going then you're nothing. Tech5 engine looks lovely though, I hope they can add some games to it.

the amazing games he has made
what amazing games? hes only made around 12 games about 4 that were sucessful and people act like hes some amazing figure whos been in gaming for decades.
doom3 was one of the most overhyped games ever to be released and it was a steaming turd in the dark.
the original doom wasnt all that great either if it wasnt for it beeing violent it would have been a big fail

If you didn't like his games, fair enough, thats 1/5 of my points argued against... care to take on the rest? or i'll win with a pretty crushing 4-1 lead :(

People seem to bring this down to "lol I dident liek duum3 so now id sux"... you fail to realise the staggering amount of influence John Carmack has had in shaping the ENTIRE gaming industry from the very games we play to the technology that drives them... to say he is overrated is just fail on an a truely unheard of level.

You are aware that, until the Source engine came along, nearly all the PC shooters you've played were partly thanks to John Carmack's excellent engine building?
