Tell me about the Corolla AE86

hahahaha :D

I owned two AE82s, which use the same engine in a slightly lighter fwd form. Lot of fun, but certainly not that quick by today's standard. As a car, generally very reliable. My second AE82 had 144k on the clock before I sold it and was never a spot of bother.
The key issue you'll face is rust. I checked out a couple of 86s before buying my second 82. Both had more rust than the titanic. Have to say that I'm just not convinced at their value bearing in mind their cost.

For a decent rwd Japanese car, I'd suggest look at either an FI MX5, or an S13. The MX5 is a better sports car, the S13 is more of a GT. I've seen both super and turbo charged MXs for less than the price of a decent 86, and IMO there's just no competition.

Dare I say it - but how much are e36 M3's these days?

Get a Volvo 960 Turbo saloon.

RWD, 80's, Ugly, plus it's more powerful and more comfy.

Or if we're heading in the direction of 'stuff you normally wouldn't consider' - Merc 190E 2.3/2.5 Cosworth?

While i do have a (init-D based) soft spot for the AE86 the man has a point, the 5 is a much better car for the cash and there are some great cars around for 4.5k...

Yea, you can just about if you're sharp.

The power per litre isn't the aim, it's the fact that most of smallblocks will do at least 300ft.lb of torque, making it from 1500RPM upwards - and will do so indefinitely, mile after mile, without asking for anything barring standard servicing.

Even my old L98 was 'only' 230BHP but made 340ft.lb and consequently sub-6 seconds to 60 times were standard. Later alloy-headed L98s are 245BHP and 5.5 to 60 depending on rear end - and of course the LT1s/LT4s are 300/330BHP+.

Light car too, so doesn't have much to pull around.

And of course, being an SBC.....the maximum output is nigh-on unlimited. Easily boosted and infinite numbers of parts availaible off the shelf to soup them up, even over here :D

300, 400, 500, 600BHP - all relatively easy to reach via a combination of off-the-shelf parts, if you're willing to get into the engine.

Never did a 960 afaik

760 turbo was a luxury version of the 740 turbo with the same 2.3 Turbo engine (170bhp i think). 960 had the 200bhp straight 6.

There are 940 turbos but they are all lpt's and pretty slow (2.3 is 130bhpish)

There was according to the Parkers website at least. Although, on paper the 3.0 had more power (again, according to Parkers) :p

:D:D:D

Sent to people at work, genius pic

Having owned one I can assure you they aren't

Clutch and gearbox problems were the order of the day. But other than those two it was bullet proof.

O I knows, should really have put a ;) smiley there instead of :D

I might consider a Sunny Gti as an upgrade from my SR when I start driving again when I buy a house out of London. Great sleeper, Drex get a sunny :D:D:D

doh i meant 960 turbo, the 960 had a 200bhp striaght 6 but was never turbo'd. They did do a turbo version of the engine in the s80 so you never know.

edit, although i think they did 960 turbos for the european market with the 2.3 turbo, fail :(

See, I was under the impression that whilst they aren't fast by any stretch on the imagination, even as stock they are great fun to drive due to light weight, a fantastically well balanced chassis and a responsive engine.

there no doubt fun, from what i understand there not as easy to drive as people make out, and as you say there going to be slow but honestly how long do you think you could last with 130bhp and a soft chassis, there a lot of work to make good, you can pick up highly modded ones though for similar money to unmodded and that may be a good option, 20v 4age conversions etc.

From reading toymods the general impression i got was that as far as toyota chassis of that time go, the ae86 was at the bottom of the pile and the contemparay celica's etc are better, hence why they steal half the bits off them. They can be very very good as can anything, but certainly seem to need a lot to get there.
