Wahoo, anyone else seen this news?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7506742.stm

BT is to invest £1.5bn in fibre optic cables, giving up to 10 million UK households access to faster broadband.

The plans would bring 40% of homes in reach of an ultra-fast service by 2012.

BT is also planning to put fibre-optic cable into about 1 million homes, making the service even faster for those customers.

However, the communications group has made clear it will only make the move if regulator Ofcom allows it to get a

decent return on that investment.

Remaining customers would be offered broadband speeds of between 40 and 60 megabits a second (mbps), it said.

In order to pay for the project BT has said it will suspend its £2.5bn share buy-back programme in July - by which time it will have returned more than £1.8bn.

'New chapter'

"Broadband has boosted the UK economy and is now an essential part of our customers' lives," said BT chief executive Ian Livingston.

It looks as though this could be the moment broadband enthusiasts have been crying out for

"We now want to make a step-change in broadband provision which will offer faster speeds than ever before. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in Britain's broadband story."

But the firm has warned that conditions need to be right for its investment.

BT has urged Ofcom to nurture a "supportive and enduring regulatory environment" which includes removing current barriers to investment and making sure that anyone who chooses to invest in fibre optics can earn a fair rate of return for their shareholders.

A spokesman for the firm said BT hoped to discuss updating its current universal service obligation with the watchdog.

Under current rules BT must provide a copper connection to all homes, however, the firm says this is out of date and unnecessary for updated services based on a fibre-optic connection.

BT's rival Virgin Media already uses fibre-optic cables, which are faster than BT's copper lines, although the final connection to the home user is done with traditional coaxial cable.

Meanwhile, other BT competitors including Carphone Warehouse and BSkyB are switching clients to their own networks so they do not have to rent copper lines from BT Wholesale.

Better returns

BT's spokesman also added that the business would be hoping to get a better return on its fibre operations as it would represent a riskier investment.

"At present we are allowed a 10% return on the capital put into our Open Reach service, we would be looking for more than that," he added.

Britain has been slower to invest in fast broadband than some countries, with BT in particular cautious about spending the large sums involved.

The group's plans should enable homes to run so-called "multiple bandwidth-hungry applications" which would enable some family members to watch high definition movies while others were gaming or working on complex graphics projects.

Broadband comparison service broadbandchoices.co.uk welcomed the move saying it showed BT's commitment to bringing the UK's broadband service "up to speed" and provide better coverage for users in both rural and urban areas.

I hope ofcom agree with BT. It would be great to have competion with Virgin media. Does anyone have any idea, if BT would branch into Digital Tv as well?

Will they have to dig up roads etc. in order to get this working? If so, that could be a major hurdle :/

yep, they have to put fibre optics in. It's about time though. Most of the copper wire is in such a bad state anyway.

And I think BT have branched into digital tv.

Cool, I have no idea what they are doing. Haven't had bt for 3 years.

Dont they already have lots of unused fibre optics in the ground since the internet boom?
Either way this is good news :P

Only?

I've been on 512kbps for the past 4 years... :( Stupid Post Code.

Well I used to be on 2mbps, then I moved out and was on 10mbps (uni dorms), then I moved into a house and am on 11mbps.

The uni is getting expanded right where my house is, so hopefully they will share the fiber network with the surrounding areas.

Yeah I agree. Because the copper in my area is so bad, I had to get Virgin cable.

My phone line is exceptionally crackly and BT says there's nothing wrong with it. I do love them at times. Here's hoping that they don't **** up fibre-to-the-home :)

I'll finally be able to get cable too maybe - I can't believe there's no cable here, I'm about 500m from a police station and 300 from uni halls which I know have lightning fast connections - I can't get sky because the residents association won't let us put dishes on the building unless we get a communal one put on the block and that apparently costs loads - and not enough interest. So roll on the fibre optic rollout.

By 2012? It'll be 2020 before I get anything like that around where I live. :(

Still... 3Mbps is alright for me at the moment.

Lets hope they actually run the fibre optics right up to the houses. I think VM were caught in a lie when they claimed their cable internet was on fibre optics when in fact it was fibre right up to the roads and then converted onto copper wiring to the houses so you still got slow/awful connection.

There is a fair bit, but it's between data centers and the like, useless for what is needed (more to the actual street).
IIRC Google now owns masses of that old excess fibre.

It's good to hear that BT are finally putting some money into updating more than just the backbone and exchanges, although I would query how far £1.5 billion will actually go to updating the UK's connections to the houses (iirc NTL/BY put somethig like 4 billion into their network).

They're having their AGM tomorrow at the Barbican and protests are to be expected because of this:

"Phorm Inc have signed exclusive contracts with Virgin Media, BT Group PLC and Car Phone Warehouse (TalkTalk) to install Layer 7 network switches within the core broadband networks in the UK. Without getting too technical the system (branded as WebWise) intercepts every single web based communication you initiate in your browser unless they are encrypted - which most are not.

It then inserts software cookies on to your computer for the purpose of gathering behavioural statistics based on the web pages you view; it also makes a copy of every web page you view as it is being sent to your PC and builds a list of key words based on the contents of the web page.

This type of behavioural profiling is very rich data and can be used to determine many things about your life and who you are such as:

1. Topics you are interested in
2. Your Political Opinions
3. Your Health
4. Your Financial Status
5. Your Sexual Preferences
6. Where you live
7. When you are or are not at home
8. Your Investments
9. Who you communicate with
10. What you type on web forums or social network sites

This type of information is very useful for advertising companies as it allows them to target you with commercial advertising when you visit web pages. However this type of information is also protected by many laws within the UK and EU because it is classed as personal information which most people believe should be private. For example, do you really want advertising companies to know what investments you have or the contents of your emails?"

I'm not sure how it would affect us as end users but don't really like the sound of it. Glad I'm with BE!

I hear ya mate. Been on 512kbps for the past 5 years. Can't get anything faster from BT. Moving to Virgin Fibre Optic so getting 2mb. My internet is currently a joke, anytime before 4am my download speed is 8kbps and if I'm lucky its 14kbps. Such a big difference to when I was in Uni last month when most people went home (700kps for the win).
