I work near a train station and everyday there are at least 5 trainspotters on the platform. There is such a variation on the sort of people that do it. From young kids to old guys, men and women, scruffy people and people in suits.

Does anyone here spot trains? What is the appeal?

We are all just as sad.

I don't really know, as I would have thought that by now, there would be little to no variation from each station. Its going to be the same trains running the same routes each time.

I do like trains, though. Can't wait for maglev to take off.

They're very sad...
See them all the time. I can understand them coming out for old steam engines. But If seen them at fuel depots looking at the freight engines

theres a guy round here that gets on the bus every morning and "Spots" other buses while on one, its a never ending cycle of dullness!:D

the bus we were on broke down once, I thought he was gonna explode when the engineer came and opened up the engine door! he was fighting to get off the bus!:p

Trainspotters are a special breed of sad people and even I don't understand them. Their entire hobby is merely to collect as many stock numbers as possible. Thats it. I cannot understand why and they are everywhere.

It is NOTHING like being interested in PC's, cars, or even being interested in railways.

However what bothers me most about them is that most of the general public think there are only two types of people - people who are not interested in railways, and trainspotters. Therefore if you happen to casually mention you've got an interest in rail transport, everyone thinks you are a member of the pointless Thermos Flask and Bobble hat brigade

Tbh I wish I was that passionate about something and imagine how good it would be if todays teenagers were as well.

sure they're not just drunk chavs chaving it up near railway lines? :p

You get them as well. The amount of chav knickers you find under bridges. I mean WTF how can anyone want to shag on a rail track or sit and get drunk. It's dirty, uncomfortable dangerous and the train toilets flush straight onto the track.

"You" find? Are you sure your not actively seeking out dirty knickers under railway bridges? :P

They do?
I'm going to drink lots of water at work now, see if I can hit any of them on the way home :3
