Pay Cuts?

I've just found out that we're due to get what amounts to a 20% pay cut (ie, 20% extra work for the same money). We're also yet to even get close to having an inflation raise this year. I'm amazed our union's let this one through. The meeting on Friday with the managers where it's made official could get interesting.

Anyone else ever had something like this thrust upon them by their employer?

Thats what happens in recessions.

yes, new load of products to support, manager put everyones (below me) wages up by 1500 put mine up by 500 so that people I was managing were on 1500 les than me a year. I left 1 month later.

Getting 20% more work for the same money is not a 20% pay cut. Workload fluctuates, and in hard times, more work has to be done by fewer people.
Would you prefer that your employer had to lay off many people so they could pay the remainder an (according to you) acceptable pay increase?

We're currently having a recruitment drive and we made hideous profits last year so it's not as if they're struggling.

Yeah, just had something similar slapped across my face too. About to start working in a hospital and the government have just said that we don't get hospital accommodation provided any more for free. They want to charge me around £350 a month for the privilege of staying in what are essentially student halls (fairly grubby ones at that). No increase in pay to compensate so while technically it's not a pay cut, they're asking us to pay an extra £4,200 a year (after tax).
Oh and less that a month to go and I still have no idea of my hours or pay. Phoned them up and they gave the lame excuse of "oh, we're really busy, we'll have your contracts ready about 4-6 weeks AFTER you start work". Not much I can do about that, just going to have to bite down hard on the proverbial pillow.

everyone else in the country has to fork out for digs.

It's more like 17% pay cut really. You're doing 120% of the work for 100% of the money, not 100% of the work for 80% money.
So you can feel a bit less bad about it at least.

I'm in the dubiously fortuitous position of not caring whether I keep this job or not, so whenever my employer asks something outrageous of me, I tell him where he can stick it.

I think he's getting sneaky, and piling it up slowly, rather than coming in with ludicrous "you will do this, is that OK" statements, that I just said "no" to.

ASsuming he's a doctor in his first couple years he'll be being forced, pretty much to shift area's and locations while working in different specialities or area's that need the work/have a place available for training and they used to give you a place in the housing they have. Though afaik for several years they've been forcing people to pay for it and its not cheap either. Some places are not far off student hall accomadation, tiny, grotty, loud, not hugely private and not at all cheap based on how big they are.

To a certain degree, you don't make a huge amount anymore in the first couple years and its very hard to get your own place when you might not even be staying in a single area for more than 6 months and sometimes a lot less so with moving to a new place at shortish notice, finding a place and getting a contract thats longer than how long you'll actually be there they do get screwed somewhat.

But thats life, doctors are getting it easier than several years ago, and much easier than 10-20 years ago and after a couple years there is decent pay. THe NHS is getting fairly bad and its quite easy to get stuck as a doctor now at a capped salery in a crappy job.

As to the OP, if you're a fireman which it sounds like other people know you are then, meh, what hours are a 20% increase exactly. It depends but a lot of people me included understand what they do is dangerous but they aren't out on a call all the time and when not theres a lot of waiting. If its an extra shift a week, or an extra hour a shift and 90% of that is sitting waiting for a call, it will be hard to complain IMHO. Everyone wants to be paid more for what they do, but thats life.

With firemen, I appreciate what they do is dangerous but at the end of the day you never had to go and work as a fireman and frankly if you aren't fully aware of just how dangerous it is before you start then thats your fault rather than anyone elses. plenty, i mean plenty of people are paid less well than firemen and have to deal with danger. Personally I find it irritating that people choose to work as a fireman then after they start working complain the money isn't enough and also say they should be paid more because its dangerous like its a surprise after they get into the job.

I can appreciate that everyone has to pay for their accommodation but until recently, that had been one of the (few) perks of the job. Until 2 years ago, it was a legal requirement for the hospital to provide free accommodation, then they twisted the rules and scrapped it without consulting either the doctors/med students or the representing union. They are starting charging us this coming year as it would have been too much hassle to change it for the year before me. Nothing we can do about it either. I've been on numerous protests, written to my MP and done everything short of threaten to go on strike but nothing has changed so I'm just going to get on with things and rent out. Not the best thing to do as my rotations are 3 months each and in different hospitals about 30-45 mins from my flat.

About time too, the fire service needed modernising.

The Fire Service idea of modernising is to spend less and demand more. They are trying to push through a new shift system (Manchester are already suffering from it) where I could be called into work with only 24 hours notice as their new idea is that I will continue to work my usual shifts but will OWE 28 days extra per year and can expect no extra payment for it. This is to allow cover where individuals are off sick but without the need for paying overtime.

They are touting this as being 'family friendly' but refuse to account for the hassle it will cause trying to get childcare at very short notice and the cost of doing so (at least £120 per day). Expect a strike soon as I will not allow the Fire Service to compromise my ability to care for my son.

That's dreadful, which idiot came up with that system and which idiot approved it! Do you at least get 28 days plus usual holiday?
Family friendly my arse
