will the ps3 ever reach the standard of xbox live?

It will get better but MS should always be a step ahead with the fees they get. I'm still waiting for MS to overhaul their service.

Updates are just that. Improvements, an attempt to make it better.

So there's only onwards and upwards. I really do believe PSN can be as good as Xbox live is right now.

But who's to say where Xbox live will be when PSN get's to that stage ;)

Nope, not this generation.

One main thing that lets it down. No universal Mic! They need a noise gate on the mic also so that when the input volume gets to a set threshold you'll here the speech. At the moment it's on...all the time! God awful.

Next generation they need to bundle a mic with it.

One thing psn has one over live is dedicated servers, yes there are some games which dont have them but more games do have dedicated services.

They also have region splitting in some games, so youd only play with people from your region. If live had this it would improve lag and abuse problems.

Let's bring the software hardware debate up. :p

Software is improvable. And considering the PS3 is built upon dedicated servers, PSN has the ability to surpass 360.

If the software steers in the right direction.

Careful, a lot of ignorant folk don't want to hear things like that.

:D

Basically.

This could end any way.

Ps3 could end up with software that equals or betters live.

Live could end up with Dedicated servers that equals or better PSN

Both could end up with both and end up equal.

And then it's the features that will sell.

And considering the new movie section PSN just got, I'm thinking most features will eventually be seen on both consoles.

or will it stay the same?

Well PSN has improved a lot since its inception under 2 years ago, Xbox live is getting close to being 7 years old.
So just to help things out what features from XBL do you want on PSN, the only 2 i can see is in game voice chat and in game invites, both being addressed in a future update and by home. The headset issue is a problem, but its an easy one to rectify, as Sony are doing with the official Sony PS3/Socom headset, and it seems like it will be a pack in a future SKU.

I wouldn't say 'never', but MS make changes with ease almost at will where as Sony seem to take ages to make small steps.

The difference is, MS's Live system is OS integrated, so it is really easy to do some cool stuff where as Sony's is all separate and as a result, it's awkward and difficult to do the same cool things that are easy for MS.

A bit of foresight goes a long way and Sony, when it comes to software and online have shown they aren't as clever as MS when it comes to future planning and proofing.

I think that it will close the gap on xbox live but i think it will take a long time for them to fully catch up. I think the main difference is still the price, its a much easier decision to go for the xbox as its pretty cheap for the console and the knowledge that the online service is already mature. I think it takes sony longer to react to changes in the market as they're too busy trying to sell their consoles too worry about what happens once they are sold
