Software to rip part of a DVD to avi/mpg?

That would be illegal...thus can't talk about it here.
We're talking about DVDs I've produced/made! ie: Home videos! (I've long since nuked the source files)
I had to find a way of converting a DVD last week, found this to be the best. Does what it states, and free too

Worth a shot, although I converted 4 dvd video files lasting from 1:30 upto 8:30 mins. Have you given it a go?

dvddecryptor + autogk is the standard for ripping whole dvds or chapters. Not sure how good at small sections
