SCEE president David Reeves confirms 40GB will be phased out as new SKU launches on August 27th

Sony will launch a new 80GB SKU in Europe and PAL territories on August 27th.

The company will phase out the 40GB model, and the new higher capacity machine will cost £299 - or €399 in wider Europe.

SCEE president David Reeves told an exclusively invited PAL crowd in Santa Monica tonight:

"In PAL, we will introduce an 80GB PS3 80Gb on August 27th. It will be a simultaneous launch across all PAL territories, and reach Russia two weeks later, due to compliance issues. "It will cost 399 Euros or £299. Promotional bundles will arrive between mid-September and mid-December at various prices.

"The 40GB model will be replaced by 80GB. Don’t ask if we’re going to go down in price on 40GB – the answer is no.

"This has been planned by Kaz [Hirai] for months. There are very few 40GB models left - especially in UK. We predict we'll be out of stock by the time we launch."

Im sure its the same thing as the US new model ie a 40GB with a bigger harddrive and a Dual shock 3

I thought the big deal about the 80gb was that it was going to be BC. Might aswell keep mine and ram a bigger HDD if needed in the future and just buy a Dualshock 3 controller.

I bet certain shops will bundle a game in with the price so not to bad a price considering what you get. Would be better if they lowered the price though.

Would only ever buy a PS3 when its BC, disappointed with this

Then you'll probably never get one as it looks like there won't be any more BC.

On backwards compatibility: Jack explained that Sony looked at how to "not take a greater hit on production cost, without losing PlayStation's heritage ... Hardware / software for backwards compat wasn't all that expensive. ... but we're selling PS2 software to PS2 customers, and selling PS3 software to PS3 consumers." Still, Jack seems to feel like it may have been the wrong move. "I would like to have had it in there, but Sony's collective strategy determined we could afford to lose it. We've now gone down that road, and we're not going back."

Why does the US get it for so much less?

Taxes, customs, any other random excuse you want to add in feel free. The US econemy is different to ours.

Oh I just got told its cause they hate you and every other UK gamer. Sorry.
