I am just changing my PC and I bought a 8800GT 512mb from my brother for £ 60 which keeps things in budget, a 4850 would cost me £ 45 more inc delivery as I don't pay VAT as I`m in Jersey.

Is it worth me selling the 8800GT on ebay to get my money back and getting the 4850 instead, I didn't think the 4850 was a £ 45 better graphics card.

A 4850 will come in to its own with lots of AA, at stock without AA i dont think it would be a much noticable improvement over the GT.

Try it out first and see what you think , prices may well drop over the next few weeks after you have had a play around with the 8800GT ;)

Whats you max resolution on your monitor and system specs may help others to give you a better opinion.

The thing is I don't play games that much, but I have a 24" monitor capable of 1920*1200. I don't usually change the graphics settings from what is recommended as optimal by the game.

I`m not one to configure the graphics options to get the best visual although I would like to play at 1920*1200 but I wouldn't mind going lower.

System Spec:

Q6600 @ 3.4ghz
8GB RAM

at 1920x you would see a bigger gain from the 4850 over 1680x and lower - however personally I'd stick with the 8800GT as I'm not an ATI fan.

I'm not an ATI fan.
If you ain't an ATI fan by now you must be a real stubborn nVidia fanboy! :D

And a a real stubborn nVidia fanboy would only be happy paying £600 for his GPU? because if it wasn't for ATI that's exacty what would happen. . . .

cmon Rroff let it go, the war is well and truly over! :)

Nice! :)

Hard to beat that in terms of *Bang-For-Buck*

The 8800GT is a great card and kept me happy for several months but as soon as I saw early HD4850 results I decided to flog it quickly and pick up a new Radeon.

Yeah and I don't really play games that much but the 8800GT is still a very capable card, if I bought the 4850 it would purely be for benchmarks which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I went from 8800GT overclocked unit, to 4870 - then back down to a 4850.

The 4850 is where its at, unless you need >1680 then the 4870 gives you that little extra grunt.

I'm not a huge nVidia fan - but I hate the ATI drivers (still)

"I hate the ATI drivers"

why? :D

I don't know about the OP but I've hated ATI drivers since the introduction of the HD2xx series as they have broken a lot of the capability with older games which worked fine up to X1xx, wheras NV has actually been improving their compability in that regard.

May not be an issue for you if you only play the latest and greatest.

Not so sure about that aoc was bad for me on my 320 with missing textures and what not.

(cough) Call of duty 1 on any G80/G92 card has problems but none with ATI. I was playing a lot of that still about 7 months ago but my GTX is problematic in this game. It's the only issue I've had with either Nvidia or ATI. I never find bad support for ATI or Nvidia for older titles at all.
