Hi chaps!
I'm after a upgrade spec please :) I just need the basics, psu, mobo, cpu gfx card, cpu, memory, cpu cooler, hard drive and a case.
It's been about 3 years since my last build and what can i say i'm totaly lost!
But i think a 9870 is a must, from what i've heard its a great card!
Mite be able to push the buget a bit if needed, thankyou for any help! :)

Thankyou! would it be worth me getting a wolfdale if i fancey getting back into overclocking.

btw the price of the 4870 has moved down to £170, and with the £5 saving of the E8400, thats about £20, which would allow you to get a HX620W Corsair PSU, OR an X38 chipset mobo, which would allow crossfire in fll 16x 16x, instead of 8x 8x on the P45

Went for something slightly different... There's about £10 more play if you wanted a better CPU cooler, if it's just for noise then stick with the ACF7, other for overclocking get something with a little more punch.

EDIT:

Totals got missed of the picture, it comes too:

Sub Total: £576.88
Shipping: £12.95
VAT: £103.22
Total: £693.05

X38 mobo
And you want PC8000+ For E8400 or at least very good PC6400 C4 memory like GeiL Black Dragon, since you will need at least 440-450fsb or so and I dont think this OCZ will be good enough for that ( it will do the speed but with high timings ).

Add extra ~10quid and get better memory definitely.

I would grab x38 mobo, degrade the 4870 to 4850, get better PSU ( 650+) and add next card for crossfire later on.

Thanks for the replys chaps! i can proberly push the bugget another 100qwid or more, if it's worth it, maybe a little more. Can i add a 2nd card to crossfire or do i have to buy them as a bundle. :)

I whent a bit mad with it :) is there anything i can cut back a little on, or is this system wrth every penny! :)

Well kinda mate yeah. The pc's that me and shaffaa spec'd are technically on-par and they are £170 - £180 less. What's killing that spec is the overly extravagant case and motherboard. The CPU is also adding to the cost, it's 166 Mhz and 9.5x more compared to 9x multi of the E8400 yet costs £37 more - cost cannot be justified. The RAM I can understand if you want to overclock as it's 8500 and good RAM therefore the cost increase can be justified.

EDIT: Just read the above comments... was saying the same d'oh!

Well if your looking to cut costs, then I went for the Asus P5Q Pro, rather than then P5Q-E. Saved a few quid for essentially the same board.

That's the RAM I just got for the build I'll be doing (for a friend), not read anything negative about it, and the extra cooling has to help. Could poss have got better timings, but am planning on higher overclock.

The HX520W is a good unit, but check out the TX650W. Uses single rail instead of split (a good thing), but doesn't use modular cables, so may be a little bit untidier if you not to good at hiding cables! Still a very good price for more power though.

I personally consider that E8500 to be a bad deal compared to the E8400. Not getting much for more £40 extra :( You are after all getting an aftermarket cooler, so be better saving the cash for other bits and overclock instead :) (IMHO)

Might want to consider the X38 boards as they are very cheap now, and would save you about £80 for some versions compared to the X48. Of course, if you want all that then great, but consider the saving of £40 on CPU, £80 on Board, £10+ on the PSU and possibly a compromise with the case (£20+?). You could have an extra £150+ to put towards getting a decent monitor, or surround system etc...

I'll make it short:

x38 mobo ~120
E8400 ~115
4gb Geil Black dragon ~ 70
Thermaltake 750 ~ 80
Tuniq Tower ~35
HD 4850 ~120
Decent case ~80
Spintpoint F1 500gb ~50
Tube of MX-2 ~5

-----------------Total ~680

Looks cheap, not sure if i forgot something.
You can add second card for crossfire later if you need more power.

Nice and cheap !

not sure if the psu will be enough ? and add a tuniq tower on as well :)

You putted too much on GPUs which he probably won't need and too less for the rest ;).

You gotta balance it, in compare to my spec you used 2,5x cheaper case, worse memory, worse cpu, worse hdd, worse PSU and no cooling just to have GPU power which he probably will never use unless he likes to play at 30 inch monitor, or 24inch with loads of AA / AF on .

I would say stick with that for now and see if you need more graphic power then just buy another card later on crossfire.

Really too many ppl waste the money they don't need to.
Not a long ago most of us been playing with 8800GT/ 3870XT ( and many still do ) and everyone was happy - 4850 has a lot more power to offer and I think it's more than enough to run ANY GAME (well, not counting crysis and age of conan - for those you need gtx280x4 in sli and 4.5ghz cpu) up to date with very decent settings (1680x1050 on max with some AA/AF on ).
