Can you post here and let us know what you think of the difference?

I'm in the same position too and don't know whether to take the jump and upgrade the graphics card

My specs are -

EVGA nForce 680i SLi Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz clocked up to 3.25GHz
Corsair 4GB DDR2
Hiper 670W PSU
GeForce 8800 GTX

I'm thinking the fact that my board is not PCI express 2.0 and my CPU is not super fast so the new graphics card may have its impact reduced.

I have a similar set-up and wondering if PCI 2.0 is really a must for the new cards. Don't really want to buy a new board yet since I will buy a new one at end of the year with new LGA sockets coming out.

Also been playing AoC and was debating should I get a second 8800GTX, a 280GTX or would a 4870 have similar results?
Will I see a real improvement in AoC (playing 1900x1200 all maxed out at 25-30fps) or is my CPU @3.0 limiting my current card ?
What can I expect to see as an increase in FPS with the different options.

Thx for your advice :)

I think even with PCI 2.0 the difference is not that significant and thats the problem I'm having in justifying the expense. Crysis is the only game that my current system can't run maxed out (a game that I like to still have a blast in now and again).

From what I've read, there is obviously an improvement in performance when running banchmarks in games and 3dMark - however when not benchmarking I think I'll be hard pressed to tell the difference. On saying that, as its been a year and a half since I bought the 8800, I'm still tempted.

I'm still interested in Adsta's thoughts on the difference and I think there are more price reductions on the cards with the next release from the red camp so its probably inevitable I'll cave in at some point.:D

If your set on a 4870 I'd wait 4-5 wks til after the X2 is out, then pay the difference between GTX sale and a new 4870, also by then should be next version of Rivatuner to fully release cards potential, maybe also the more powerful card would benefit from cpu o/c to 3.3 from 3.0 too ?

I would not recommend going from a SLI 8800gtx setup to a GTX 280 if your SLI setup is working fine. Sure it idles less heat and uses less power and you don't have SLI related probs.

But in terms of performance against a game which does support and utilises SLI most cases the 280 is slower than a overclocked 8800 dual setup. It does have slightly higher min frame rate but is is a very small increase. If you want it for more of convienience then by all means but in pure performance terms it is a sidestep unless of course you plan to sli or TRI sli it.

My main gripe with something like the 280 is that is doesn't do anything spectacular over say a 4870 or sli 8800 setup at anything less than 2560x1600. Seeming that bracket of gaming is very small the 280 is limited to a very small section of the gaming population.

Of course if you have decided to get a 280 then that equally fine. But if your games run fine and you are happy with it then don;t bother with a 4870 or 280. JUst carry on enjoying games until the next round of games or next round of cards whichever comes first.

:)

Its not,

I ran a 4870 in a PCI-E 1.1 slot with no loss of perfromance.

Gtx is still a great card unless you run at insane res or really got the urge to upgrade i would wait, but your card will be worth less and less if that ok then wait until you really need it.
I really think if you need to ask then really you know you don't need to upgrade unless you been out of the loop for a while on hardware.
