Ufo aftershock, aftermath, aferlight - any good?

The only thing I miss from the original XCom series is the fact that I was defending a modern day Earth from invasion. All these other games don't draw me in as much because none of them are in a truly contemporary setting :(

Haven't played an X:Com game since Apocalypse & Interceptor. The mod remake of Enemy unknown looks pretty decent for a non financed game but I'm not sure it would stand up to the original

Well UFO : Extraterrestrials when patched and modded with frankenmod and ovin's tactical mod is pretty much the closest thing you'll ever get to the original xcom game. Totally recommend a look if you liked the original.

Thanks for posting those mods Sleepery. Time to reinstall and play it again, I always play a game to death as soon as I get it and it's uninstalled by the time decent mods come out :)

can you post the links to these mods?

ive tried the Batman mods? they seem pretty good and have a lot of things that make it look like orig Xcom.

ill compare the 2

ok Mini review time:

UFO: Extraterrestrials

I didnt even try it un-modded as some of the comments made it obvious that modded versions were going to be the only option for me. After all we are all going for the holy grail - A graphically up to date version of XCOM:Enemy Unknown.

So i tried Bman's mods which is everything in the link below including installation guide: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=345953

The game is fairly enjoyable it is very clear Bman wants XCom: EU style game play. right off the bat its very easy to pick up. almost identical to Xcom:EU. Researching Laser weapons then medi kits etc. I liked the fact the mod keeps track of how many aliens each soldier has killed and has an "XP" gain system. Each time a soldier levels up he gets attribute bonuses which you dictate where to put.

The actual globe itself kinda bugs me, i wanna protect earth not some alien planet... maybe another mod fixes this i dunno..

There is A LOT of customisable things in this mod. how much $$$ per alien killed, frequency of uber bosses. Swarms of UFOs, and even option of UFOs travelling in pacts for greater protection. This certainlly adds to a VERY interesting globescape battle.

Most of my time has been in the tactical battles with a 5 UFO missions so far. I like how when you move your soldiers, before you left click to confirm, it shows you the route the soldier will take and the time units it will spend getting there. The only gripe here is moving a soldier exactly one square to the side can be tricky (or is it just me?)

Shooting accuracy is much improved. before in Xcom you could shoot an alien with a soldier miles back accross the map and have fairly good accuracy. This is not the case now, if your soldier is too far back accuracy will drop to 1-5%

there does seem to be some crashes every now and again in tactical mode (ie UFO missions) but in this mod u can choose to autosave every turn which has its own slot and save it urself every turn in another slot. So no biggy just a lil buggy. Or maybe its my PC Vista x64 ¬_¬

Anyways ill play a few more ours and update the review, then ill try the other mods listed above.

So far so good!

Me and my mate used to play X-com enemy Unknown on the PS1 about 10 years ago. We loved that game.

So naturally i bought it again and the PS1 mouse and we are playing it at the moment. True classic

Just a quick question about the original UFO Enemy Unkown. I dug it out a while ago and installed on XP and the time base was all speeded up. I got round this by never staying on the globe map when I wasn't specifically waiting for a ufo to appear or to get to the next research. My thinking was if I "paused" the game by being off the globe map while I was thinking tactics or planning stuff then things wouldn't happen so quick, cos I know the only way to lose the game is to let the aliens spread too much which obviously is time based to a degree. Anyway, I thought I was doing ok, I had bases on every continent and Alien activity wasn't too high at all. I was just about to start researching psy skills then bang, I get the message that several countries have signed a pact and I get the sack. Now I'm thinking, was this a genuine game loss due to me liking to slowly build up bases and be steady and somehow missing the signs of the invasion, or does running it on a fast pc somehow accelerate the invasion regardless. I haven't started a new game cos I was a bit narked at the suddeness of being sacked, after spending ages building things up and going after virtually every ship spotted. If someone can tell me the fast pc thing has nothing to do with it I will give it another go cos it is an excellant game. ps I tried moslo but it just seemed to bugger my pc up.

I think the dual core amd patch thingy sorts some problem like that out, might be of use if you are using an X2 chip.

I am using an X2 but have all those patches installed. I'm just about to change to an E8500, but it will probably run even faster with that. What I ought to do is bang and old pc together from bits I have lying around just to play my old DOS games. I've been meaning to do that for years. The main issue I was having was I didn't know if there was some internal timer the game uses to determine when the invasion starts which is buggered up by a fast cpu, even if you "pause" the game by leaving the globe view.

See if it will play under DosBox. It should do, depending on the version. That way you can throttle the cpu in dosbox settings until it runs at the speed you want.

o if this is the case then i might play xcom, because the only thing that bugged me was the fact that the globe span 300 times a click lol

Don't use DosBox for UFO:Enemy Unknown, assuming you have WinXP:

Hit run.
Type dxdiag.
Disable hardware video acceleration.
Play game.
Once done, re-enable unless you want your game of COD4 to look like your dog's breakfast ;)

Incidentally, the video fix on this site does just that :)
That website is a must for any XCOM fan, I think it answers just about any questions you could think of if you take a good look.

If not I'll be happy to field some questions.

^^ Dosbox is fine for running UFO.

I installed UFO: ET when it first came out and I thought it was ok but there were some things I just couldn't see past and didn't really play it after a while. I might try it again with these mods installed.

After careful consideration and about 4 hours game play it just didnt seem right UFO:Extraterrestrials is a good attempt but by no means a XCOM:Enemy Unknown.

I have always been able to play Xcom:EU under dosbox 7.2 but my major pain in my butt was that when i clicked to spin the globe it would rotate 3 full times before stopping. I have found a fix for this!!!

goto the config find the line cycles and it will say Auto. Change it to value 20000 and it runs perfect. XCom:EU on Vista 64bit running perfect!!! the music is playing im scared and im gonna save the world!!!!
