Shirts and ties never really go in or out of fashion - just don't get anything stupid like Simpson's tie. Come to think of it, get a black tie - then you can wear it again when you go to a funeral.

Can get a non-iron shirt from M&S for £15 these days. Make sure you know your collar size.

Get a M&S non-iron standard blue shirt, good value and will last you a fair while but whatever you do, make sure it's a long-sleeve shirt rather than a short sleeve one. Don't however go for a black tie, they don't go well with much and I think they look naff. Just go for a simple striped one a slightly different shade from your shirt. Or pop into a store and see what they've got on the mannequins and decide for yourself what you think looks good.
Actually, go for a piano key tie. Never goes out of fasion ;)

Where I would go:

Tescos F&F £5
ASDA £6 pack of two
TX Maxx £3
Hughes's £1.99 in the bargain section, clicked in two places.

Some of my good ties were 50p from the above shops.

Sorted.
