Star War Galaxies - worth trying?

the NGE, combined with it bringing with it a distinct lack of anything to do even now there are only a series of instances a la raiding in more modern mmos, however these become rather pointless after youve acquired all the loot from them, and the rewards linked to the tokens

many figures left SOE after the nge, including key developers and customer relations people fed up of taking the flak and having to do a PR job on a product they hated (Tiggs is probably the most notable here)

What makes it strange is why didn't they change it back? Surely they lost a lot of customers and must have realised?

This is Sony we're talking about. Like EA, they will never admit their mistakes and would rather smugly haemorrhage money instead.

Even if you knew nothing about the NGE and pre CU SWG, I still wouldn't recommend the game to anyone. There's just so much wrong with the game it's not funny.

The worst bit is that because you can pick Jedi as a starting profession, 75% of the world's population are 12 year old Jedi. And because the game has to be balanced, they're not the supermen they were in the films, just tanks with a glowy sword.

If you want to craft, you have to pick a trader class so that's ALL your character can do. But because you still need to get out and about to hunt down resources, and yet have no way to defend yourself, they decided to make all the monsters in the world ignore you. The mind sodding boggles.

Add in the really crappy expertise trees (ooh, I've got a seventh upgrade to the ability I was using at level 1!), mind numbingly boring quests (kill 5 of x, then 20 of y, then 10 of z, then 15 of a, then another 10 of b, which looks exactly like x) and it just makes you want to go out and hurt kittens.

Edit - and speeders should go faster than 40mph damnit!!

To be honest if you had not played the game prior to NGE/CU then you may like the new iteration.

It is still the Star Wars IP which is cool, they have tried to improve questing and PVP. Although the economy is a little bit screwed at the minute.

I myself could not play it as I spent far to long playing the 'old' game to go back. I would miss my old chars and abilities too much.

Actually slightly off topic, but can anyone playing at the moment tell me if the great abandoned building demolition ever went ahead? Last time I played Tat was still covered in acres and acres of abandoned cities.

Try WoW or EVE, however be warned that I fouind EVE to be really pretty boring due to the fact that I have no mates playing it.

I find that's the case with all MMO's really, if I have no real life friends playing it I get bored extremely quickly. It must all be about the competition for me :D

EvE is by far the worst for this kind of problem, unless you find people quickly it really does become a grind.

WoW, LOTRO etc you tend to find people quicker and often group up with people on quests easily enough. Which makes it a lot more friendly.

Most mmo's are guitly off that :D

many many months ago..as a one off, which only demolished houses that were circa 2yrs old already, rather than making it a perpetual event which, for once, was actually a sensible vocalisation by the masses that never materialised beyond this one off

so yes there are plenty of abandoned cities still, but the areas around cities cleared up a bit..till the "new breed" filled the gaps back up

damn i just admited to playing the nge didnt i :o

Originally was being a Jedi an unlocked privilege class?

Sounds like they really did balls it up, I've never played it but it sounds terrible.

Have only just joined but I saw this thread and it made me sad because SWG was fantastic before Sony ruined it. It used to be thriving with everyone doing different roles but then everyone went Jedi when the changes came :(

Yeah, originally to unlock jedi you had to completely fill out a number of skill trees, but you never knew which ones (bar one which you could find out via an object). As you only gained skillpoints in a tree by doing that type of action (doctor skill tree by healing and buffing for example) it could take ages to complete a tree. You also had a skill point cap, so you couldn't fill out all the skill trees at once (this actually made characters really fun, as you could pick between skills trees for the skills you wanted, but were limited in what you could pick).

It meant only really dedicated players got a jedi slot unlocked, but also gave people something to do trying out different skill trees.

I miss it :( My character had skills in smuggler, pistoleer, bountyhunter, scout and medic. Was never brilliant at any one thing but was such an allrounder that he was really interesting to play.

Jedi characters had perma-death too, if you died 3 times you lost all your XP and had to re-roll your character. If you used Force powers or your lightsabre in public you became attackable by others for a short period of time, and if people saw you using your powers your "visibility" would go up, eventually making you huntable by Bounty Hunters.

The best part about this is that it really made you feel like you were an oppressed race, you couldn't play as a Jedi and show off in front of people, at least not until you had levelled up a lot.

If you experienced that version of Jedi in SWG you could never accept what exists now. :(
